Steering wheel lock warning light

A couple days ago I Got a red battery lighting the dash. Shortly after that all the dash lights spazzed out and the car died. I figured it was the alternator and had it towed 50 miles home. Replaced the alternator with an autozone, I think it's Valero. After the install the car starts and runs great but the steering wheel lock light is now on. It has a steering wheel with a little padlock and a number 1 in it. I dropped it off at a local import shop that's close to home last night. Any ideas? It doesn't make sense to me that the steerig column is bad all of a sudden.

As I mentioned in the other post I had steering column replaced twice, 2nd time out of warranty for $1,200. Is the purpose of this steering lock an anti-theft feature or does it have other use?

Quite a revenue stream for BMW. Did they say exactly what went wrong in the column?

Or is this like their transmission "work?"

They did not tell me what went wrong, just said need new steering column and need it calibrated. They tried a re-program of some sort prior but it didn't work. This is a common issue, and unfortunately, you can't get rid of the lock, the error, or start your car until its replaced.

A painless fix if unconcerned 'bout cost.

OTOH, there is THIS - recommended for educational purposes! Those who have no knowledge are doomed to have their pocket picked. Chance favors the prepared. You get the drill....

But! Good Indy can do the DIY as well as yourself if you've not the time -- a thought.

DSX, am I right?
