Low mileage oil changed

So I purchased a 2011 "left over"last August. Garaged it for much of the winter. I have about 2,200 miles on the odometer. I stopped at a local BMW dealership today iand he inserted my key into a computer that spit out all sorts of information including mileage and next service. I am scheduled for a "low mileage" ol change among other things in August. Despite my assumption that BMW requires service at 15,000mi., I am thinking that I will get this as part of the warranty.
Can someone tell me what a "low mileage" oil change consists of? What is the difference between tat and a full oil change. With only a few thousand miles, why is an oil change needed?

Re: Low mileage oil changed

The change should be covered. It's needed because your oil is almost 2yrs old. That's all, nothing to worry about.

You are allowed a free annual oil change from the date in service of the car regardless of miles even though the CBS system is not indicating you need one. So at your rate of mileage, the CBS light may not come for a couple of years while under warranty so BMW will still cover an annual oil change regardless of miles under the 48 month warranty.

Does that make sense?

Low mileage oil changed

CBS indicates the next oil change based on mileage and time, 15000 miles or a year whichever comes first.

Oil needs to be changed every year even if you drive only a few hundred miles because it starts to break down over time in the engine.

The 15k mileage figure is only an average - it can range from about 11k to 19k, depending on how the car is driven.

And my understanding is that the oil change time interval is two years for markets other than North America, but the US CBS is often erroneously programmed for two years rather than one. So it is wise for a low mileage driver to keep track.

The CBS *won't* call for an oil change based solely on time--you have to keep track of that yourself. I've received three low mileage changes (I do about 9K a year) and each time the CBS indicated it still had significant mileage left to go when I brought it in for my change. They don't reset it, and will change the oil again (even if three months and 3K miles later) based on the CBS. I've also had this done as well.
