OBD II scanner?

2008 328 xi
does it have a OBD II socket or a different socket to read codes?
my check engine light just came on tonight and I have a OBD II scanner.
thanks in advance to all. It is our 1st BMW so we are learning.

My OBD II reader is pretty good so I will try it 1st but if not I'll be grabbing one of those Bavarian Technic Cables for sure.
here is a question. Most reader require you to put the key into the on position but do not start the vehicle. How do you do this with a BMW? seeing there is no on position for the key fob? or is it when you put the fob into the receptacle it is considered in the" on position "?

Hit the START button once briefly. Dash lights up; engine does not start. FYI

With a manual you can hit the start button without depressing the clutch. Not sure about the auto but probably the same if you don't have your foot on the brake.

I tried it last night just briefly hit the start button and it worked. tap it real quick. No brake pedal

Yes, on AT hit start button, no foot on brake. I think I will be ordering one of these soon!
