Rear Wiper not working - fuses ok

2004 3.0i with 144,000 miles.

The rear wiper and washer both stopped working recently.
Any thoughts on what may be causing this? Fuses are both ok. (15 and 45 I think)

Do you hear any sounds coming from the wiper when it is 'supposed to be' turned on?

Or is it dead silence?

There were a couple of other people with the same symptoms and no fuses blown, but unfortunately they never let us know the outcome.

The only thing I can think of is the lever switch on the steering column has partially failed even though the front wiper & washer position works O.K.

It could be the motor unit. I just replaced the motor unit in my '04 E83 and it works fine now. I haven't played with the one I pulled out, but I suspect the motor is fine. It's probably the little circuit board that's effed up. Before replacement I suspected the usual suspects. Since neither the wiper nor the washer worked I thought it must be the switch since I should still be able to get fluid out of the washer if the wiper doesn't work. Not the case. Replacing the motor (more likely it's accompanying little board) fixed both issues.

Yes, that sounds very possible. I was thinking that as the washer pump is separate up front there can't be anything electrical at the back to prevent it doing its job.

But as the washers (front and rear) automatically trigger a few wipes, it makes sense that there is a control board at the wiper motor.

It must somehow interface with the washer pump, so if the board fails then neither wiper nor washer work.

And it does make sense that a PCB is more likely to fail than a wiper motor or a switch, maybe from moisture, vibration, extremes of temperature, etc.

Where did you buy the motor unit from? I found one for around 180 at Tischer BMW.

Just thought I'd update this thread.

I ended up buying a used rear wiper motor off ebay for around 90 bucks. Just installed it over the weekend and the wiper works again. I suspect something in the circuitry of the old assembly failed. A pretty easy DIY fix.
Only need a 13mm socket, 10mm socket, phillips screwdriver and about an hour.

glad to hear it worked for you I popped the cover off the electronics on the one I pulled out and some of the leads on the board are corroded. I may refloat the solder sometime just for the heck of it and see if that works, but not a priority since I have a working unit in there now.
