Is it ever to late to change Transfer Case Fluid?

2005 x3 2.5 144,000 miles
Looking through the service records I've accumulated since I bought the car CPO 5 years ago it doesn't look like the transfer case fluid has ever been changed. I haven't had it done since it came off of CPO because I had been "afraid" to do so because of the lifetime fluid BS. So at nearly 144,000 miles is there any risk in changing this oil? I don't currently have any issues with the TC, so what are your opinions? Leave it alone or go for it? On another note my rear main axle is being replaced next week to cure a bad vibration from the most rear universal being shot. Of course this happens with one last payment due next month.

Don't think the same sort of considerations that come up with auto transmission fluid change apply for the transfer case.

No risk in doing it now.

When the vehicle was CPO'd the transfer case fluid would only have been changed if the dealership computer read a worn value code.

If your build date was before March 2005 you will likely have standard red DOT 3 ATF in there. Best to get the preferred "lifetime" xDrive Fluid in there.

If build date is after March 2005 you will already have the xDrive fluid but I'm sure it's ready for replacement by now.

Sounds like you lucked out on the transfer case but get hit with the rear axle - not uncommon.

Thanks Supercourse I didn't think it would be the same type of concern as the tranny fluid but just wanted to make sure. I'll knock that out myself next weekend.

Thanks again
