Hey guys, Today I was trying to install my Alpine head unit in my 95 540i, I had a wiring harness that hooked up to the stock wiring harness so I didn't have to cut any wires, I got it all hooked up the radio had power but do sound? I hooked the factory radio back up typed in the security code and it had sound but idk why my after market head unit don't does any one have any ideas?

It sounds like there is no turn on signal to the amp. I assume the harness would have accounted for this but that is what I would check first.

I'll say search first to get that out the way. There are threads on this here and on BF.C. A few I was apart of giving the same answer.

Did you check the speaker output lines on your aftermarket harness.

I agree with sled. Either your primary harness isn't wired correctly or your speaker lines aren't connected properly

There are a few common grounds in the factory harness that will cause this and have you scratching your head on why you're not getting sound.

Here's a pdf. It covers e34 model years 89-95.

Re: Aftermarket radio no sound?

That could be what it is is their any way I could bypass that or hook the wire up to my amp turn on on my headunit to make it work! Your probably right about the amp turn on!

Aftermarket radio no sound?

You absolutely 100% need the amp bypass harness. I went through the same thing in my wagon.

Re: Aftermarket radio no sound?

Here is some very useful information rite here! From the top I bought a cheap. E34 wiring harness off ebay for may 6 dollars at the most I hooked all the wires according to color up matched them but when I got done their was power but no sound so what I did, their is a blue wire on the wiring harness that I bought off ebay the wire is called power antanna run it into the 12volt hot wire and it is yellow! The power antanna wire is the factory amp turn on! It was a simple fix so if any one else has this problem their it is lol

Simple. You need to connect the power antenna wire (blue) to a power source. That's all. This is an old issue on this forum. You can search that one here. If you have done that already and still no sound then follow above suggestions. but that should do the trick. the power antenna wire is what sends the signal to turn on the integrated amp in the stereo and needs to be powered whether you have a power antenna or not.

This got me on the right track as I did not realize that the 4 volt remote out from my aftermarket unit would not turn the amp on. Knowing I needed a 12 volt source to turn it on pointed me in the right direction. I however, used my meter to find a 12 volt ignition actuated source instead, as the yellow wire in my harness is 12 volt constant, to avoid my amp draining my battery while the vehicle was parked. Thanks!

The 4 volt is the preamp output levels from the rca connectors on the radio. The blue/white wire on your new radio outputs 12 volts after the radio is turned on to power on the amplifier.

The blue remote turn on wire from my unit only shows 4 volts. Based on your information it is not functioning as it should and that was the root of my problem (I originally had the amp turn on wired to it)...I had assumed it was intended to be low voltage simply as a signal to activate, not provide power, so I Learned something today... by finding an alternate 12 volt source that is on/off with the ignition the desired result was achieved.
