Brake Dust

In the past BMW brake dust killed the wheels. The dust sticks on the wheels and bonds to the finish. Seems to be happening on my MINI also. Is this typical on new BMW's?

I had that problem on my '05 E83 X3.

I have almost 1500 miles on my new '14 F25 X3 and I have noticed that brake dust is not an issue so far.

Most newer BMW have change the brake pad material over to some sort of Ceramic material with the exception of the M cars. usually less dust means less bite and a bit longer stopping distance.

I get basically no dust on the F25, like none - my X5 and my 335i are terrible, but they have definitely changed it recently!

I don't have any problem with brake dust after 14k milles, Because my Wheels are Black

I get lots of brake dust. It comes off fairly easily, but I have to clean the wheels more often than I would like.

As long as it comes off that's good news. My 06 the dust was literally Baked On. And permanently.

My 2 cents: Just got home from a 500 mile trip from the PDC and have very clean wheels! No break dust noted at all.

Hey nice Bimmer. The wheels on my Mini are black and dust is killing them. The surface is pitting from the dust.

I was recently given some bmw wheel cleaner spray and it removed all the filth by spraying on then hosing off.

... Not that brake dust is a real issue on the x3

I wonder if BMW change the pad material in 2012, my 2013 is virtually dust free. Can anyone with a 2011 X3 confrim that?

I've had my 2014 for about a month. I'm shocked at the very little amount of dirt/dust that gets on the wheels.

I think they had to of. I have a 2011 and pretty much have to wash my wheels every 4-5 days because of the brake dust. I do a lot of stop and go driving which I'm sure doesn't help. It's a pita especially in winter. I have stocked up on Sonax wheel cleaner because of it.

Thank you for the feedback. My wife's 2013 X3 is about 3 months old now, I hand wash it once but I have not clean the rims at all and its still dust free. I have two bottles of Sonax in my garage doing nothing

Well if you're bored, my 2011 X3 is sitting in my driveway with filthy rims. Feel free to grab the Sonax and drop by...

Wow, would that be nice. I literally clean the rims, drive for a day and the brake dust is already showing on them. By day three they look like crap. If I wait a week, my rims no longer look silver, but gun metal grey. Sucks.

There appear to be 3 part numbers for the '11 35i front pads, at least 1 of which is discontinued, and 1 for the '11 rear pads. The '12 and '13 35i share 1 part number for front pads and 1 part number for rear pads, which are different than any of the '11 part numbers. I didn't look at the 28i part numbers.

If they changed the pads on the 2014's, they still use the old ones for replacements on 2011's. I had rear brakes done a few weeks ago and the new ones are just as bad as the originals.

I wonder if the 12 and 13 pads fit the 11.

My favorite subject

My 2011 X3 and my 2013 X5 have brake dust piling on sitting still in my driveway. Seriously the new X5 wheels turn black in two days. I use Rejex which helps.

Brake Dust

It sure seems like that for my 2011. iDrive says 18k (rear) and 28k (front) more miles until new pads so I'll be dealing with it for a while even if a new compound pad becomes available.
