From the owners manual...take note of the bmwusa web address in the bottom right column...if you go to that site, it will give you the current BMW recommendation of approved oil brands/mfgs :

I only use Castrol Edge or Mobil 1 full synthetic in any of my vehicles. Had a 1994 Chrysler New Yorker that had 227,000 smooth miles on it before I sold it. It has 291,000 miles on it now and buyer still loves it.

No it won't...it is not a 'effective' but regular oils took care of us for years. Just make sure it meets the specs provided in your owners manual or the previous response.

The CE light (check engine light) comes on when there's an issue with something in the electronic engine emissions system. OBD II was mandated by the federal govt' starting in 1996 for ALL car mfg's to meet to help with air quality. When the CEL illuminates, it means something in the emissions system has registered a fault. It could be an 02 sensor, but it could also be something else that is emissions related.

If you don't have an OBD II scanner, in most states you can take your car to places like Autozone and they will read them for free or allow you to use their scanner. You need to have the code(s) read to know what is wrong or the area that needs attention. Guessing is futile, and you could be totally incorrect if you just throw parts at the problem when you easily have the codes scanned to know which direction to go.

(take note of the 3rd & 4th bullet in 1st image below)

The car will not pass a smog check with an Autozone, Oriellys and many other auto parts stores will read your codes for free. (If I were to do this, I would probably have them read at at least two places to ensure it is correct before I spent money on parts or repairs). If the O2 sensor is bad, it can adversely affect fuel efficiency and potentially shorten the life of the catalytic converter. If the code is for O2 sensor, I would replace it. The prices for the sensor vary greatly...$85 to $140. I bought my last one at autohausaz.com...and they are usually available at your local autoparts....simple to change, but you need to determine which one. Driving with a bad O2 sensor will not cause any damage in the short to intermediate term.
