2013 335is - 2800 miles, low on oil??

Got a message when I turned my car off this morning after commuting to the office that the engine oil is below the minimum operating level and I should add a quart of oil??

Can't be a good sign?

Thoughts?? Thinking I should bring it in to the dealer so it's documented as opposed to just adding oil?

All cars burn oil. Being low - and it's probably only 1/2 quart - is not unusual. You can drop by somewhere and get an appropriate LL-01 oil (Mobil 1 0W-40 is readily available), or go by the dealer and have them top it off.

I would take it back to the shop. Let them check it out - you are under warranty. Even if it is just low oil, you have then documented it into the system if something more drastic were to happen later on. It may be fine, but you don't really know.

My 335i (non-IS) has 3500 miles on it and my oil levels are ok. If I had a low oil indicator, I would head straight for the dealership. Maybe over cautious, but better to be cautious with your new investment. You don't want to leave it to chance or luck.

Let us know if anything comes of it.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Just spoke to the dealer and they said they'd be happy to top it off and document it for me. I tried to get them to state whether it was a bit early at 2800 miles but they said it's common to have to top it off between 1-2 times per oil change interval. Still, 2800 seems a little early? The service advisor said they tend to see this most often on the 750s.

I'm going to swing by at lunch it's just a few miles up the road.

Thanks again...

Agreed, run it by the dealer, for the free top-up if nothing else.

However, I wouldn't worry much at this point. My 2009 used a quart in the first 3000 miles, and it's used perhaps 1/2 quart between oil changes (7500 miles each) since then. My understanding is that some oil use during break-in is normal. BMW will also claim that up to a quart every 1000 miles is "normal", but no owner ever agrees with that.

FWIW,
George

If its new it normal before the rings seat.

If its new it normal before the rings seat.
The piston rings should be fully seated by 5k.
Keep your eye on it though, it should improve.

Had to add oil about 4K miles the first time around. Since then have not had any supplemental adds between changes

Considering 15K miles intervals b/w oil changes, my car requires a quart approx every 4K miles, if I were to follow the recommended oil change intervals I'd have to top off almost 4 times b/w the oil changes.
Oil consumption largely depends on the traffic conditions you subject your car to, my driving is mostly city stop and go, and I ma pretty sure it contributes to the fact that I am low on oil every so often.

Ford claims 1 quart per 1k is within their spec too, so its just not BMW

I dont agree with it either.

3 things really:

- Normal
- Aggressive Driving (not TOO aggressive I hope as it's a new car)
- Oil leaking but not from underneath car; possible into coolant (worst case)

Most likely first bullet.
