BMW should include anti-sway bars on every 5er. they can't be that expensive. My first car, a 1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1, had them and they worked great.

Yes, but you can't get DHP or active steering, unlike with a 535d

For all the short trips/stop and go driving that we will use this car for, it seemed to make more sense to go for the AH5.

Well, that's debatable. I don't want to hijack this thread, but the AH3 (and by default the AH5) doesn't do extraordinarily well in stop and go. Sure, it does better than a regular N55, but not dramatically better. My new commute is basically all stop and go, and I struggle to average 25mpg. Not sure how much better the N57T would do in the same circumstances?

When the final lease rates come out for the 2014 5er I will reconsider the diesel.
Mrs D made am interesting comment to this morning - she said she misses her 335d. I asked why and she said it felt faster and was more agile. This is a lady who drives an X5M. I pointed out that the X5 was much faster and she agreed, but she said that the X5 needed to work for it while the diesel did it without any effort. Just some food for thought.

I understand the appeal of the diesel but what am I missing about the AH5 that makes it compelling? There is only a marginal improvement in city mileage at a 300 lbs weight penalty with the same highway mileage as a 535i. Throw in the price premium and it doesn't look like a very good return.

A leather dash would be the icing on the cake - but considering that it wasn't even included on the Individual, you are absolutely right by putting it in the doubtful category.

Keep us up to date, though, and congrats on your order!

I kind of doubt she would have said that about an rwd E90 with the X5M engine under the hood and that an X5d would have been judged similarly vs the 335d. Weight and size is your enemy.

Interesting. Mrs. Alpine has the opposite impression. To her the x5M just hauls ass. She would not go back to the 335d and drives my M3 when she wants a more visceral driving experience.

It's a bit tougher to make the case for the AH5 than it is for the AH3.

IMO, you can take a bit more advantage of the Hybrid technology on the lighter AH3 without some of the sacrifices you would have to make on the AH5 (smaller trunk without folding rear seats).

However, if you are a technology-geek and don't care about the trunk, the AH5 offers a great opportunity to drive a really different luxury vehicle.

The 535d (aka 530d in Europe) is a very good alternative to save a lot on gas when compared to the 535i. Performance wise, these two engines are VERY close (AFAIK, only 0.2 secs. apart from 0-60). If BMW throws in an EcoCredit, it would be a difficult decision NOT to go with the diesel.

She dismissed the X5 35d because it lacked the required umph, but the power to weight ratio favors the X5M over the 335d by a good margin. The X5M ultimately has more performance capability, but I think it takes a more concerted effort to get the max performance from the gasser, whereas the diesel had almost a point-and-click type of reaction from low rpms. Maybe we can say the diesel suits the lazier performance driver better. Sorry, Mrs D.

We should get Mrs Alpine & Mrs Dunderhi together for a battle of the M's. Of course they'll get to talking and go go something completely different.

I will be amazed if BMW doesn't do a significant Eco Credit or subvented lease.

Their CAFE numbers really want to see you in a diesel, instead of a V8.

On the whole, choosing between the two is a very, very nice problem to have.

From the May 18 BMW NA press release:

The BMW 535d has been added as BMW's latest diesel variant in North America. Its inline-6 BMW Advanced Diesel engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology makes 255 horsepower at 4,000 rpm and 413 lb-ft of torque from 1,500 3,000 rpm (preliminary figures). Simultaneously, the new BMW 535d Sedan is expected to show substantial fuel efficiency gains over its gasoline-fueled counterpart.

pharding, as someone who's about to enjoy his third Euro Delivery, let me thank you for your efforts mentioned in your signature. That residual calculation has probably saved $5000 just for me alone.

The only problem on the AH5 is that you can't get 19" wheels - not even on the M Sport. Strange that the AH5's M-Sport doesn't come with a Sports Steering-wheel although the other two non-sport lines do. I guess that's an error?

No sport-transmission with shift-paddles on the AH5, either.

I'm actually happy to have 18"s with performance tires. I've had so many problems with bubbles on my 19" I wouldn't get them again, at least not here in NY.

As for Sport transmission, I am disappointed by that, even though I hardly ever use my current paddle shifters. I wonder if it's because the Sport Transmission now has launch control, and that could be problematic with they hybrid?

You might be right about sport auto and launch control. The uk site allows you to order hybrid and 19s...

On the AH3, however, you can basically get everything. 19" wheels (even mixed performance tires and increased top speed limiter), Sport-Transmission and - when opting for the M-Line - even a Performance Brake..

It's infuriating that BMW has buried the stereo upgrade in that package with no other way to get it. Aside from the stereo, I would never order anything in it separately - so for me, the HK is a $4300 stereo on a 550.

Pharding - congrats on the new car, and if you ever have the time, I would love to hear the story behind your discussion with BMWNA and getting them to use US MSRP on residual calcs...

Guys, I know this is answered somewhere here and I should also know how it works since I did an ED four years ago... But do you know if all options and packages also have discounted ED prices the same way as the base car has an ED price? My dealer in the Chicago area just quoted me a price where the car (2014 BMW 550i) is offered at ED MSRP but all options at regular prices.
If the options have their own ED prices, where can I see these?

Also the dealer offered me a 3% discount on the above total. I have read the thread on whether to negotiate (invoice + $) or (MSRP - discount) and to be honest I think the end objective is the same. I believe meeting somewhere in the middle between ED invoice and ED MSRP is probably fair for both sides but any thoughts on what my target price should be will be appreciated. Looking into a 2014 550 M-Sport with a couple of packages (lighting, executive, winter, and maybe ada+)

Thanks!

You should be getting $500-$1000 above ED invoice and yes the options should be invoice as well. I believe pharding's CA is very fair when it comes to ED pricing (I've gotten a quote from him before), why would you want to pay more? I'm sure he can shed more light on the subject.

ETA: to answer the other part of your question, use bmwconfig to see invoice prices.
