First hand look at the 2014 BMW 435i

First hand look at the 2014 BMW 435i

BMW has been touring the 3 Series GT and 2014 435i coupe to select dealers in Demark. BMW_DK from F30Driver brings us his first hand account of the 435i coupe.

Update from another person at a Danish Dealer event
Quote:
There is a press embargo on the car until the 14th of June
If that is true we've got a couple weeks to wait until we get the 4 Series details from BMW.

Quote:
Everybody were asked to either give the dealer their cell phones (which I don't think anybody did) or get a sticker on the camera lens. It was easy to remove and they never asked about my second phone! I guess it was more meant as a signal than anything else, as it would have been easy to take pictures of the car. I didn't see anybody doing it however.

The presentation of the 3GT was postponed, allegedly because some of the participants were late due to heavy traffic (which everybody suffered from that day), but after the 3GT presentation was completed, it became apparent that the reason was that the 435i had been held up in traffic! It was driven into the showroom by a sales person and when we got the chance to get closer, the engine bay was warm as if it had been driven a long distance. The car was clean though.

I was disappointed by the engine sound, but one of my friends who own a E90 335i, said that the sound was better compared to his car, so no real conclusion there.

The car was a "sport" version, with a front bumper as "dull" as on the F30 and every other standard BMW (like my own). It looked very nice, but I simply prefer the M-Tech / M Sport bumpers on any BMW.

The side vents were real and we were told that they help getting that extra mile per gallon and cooling the brakes. As they are present on the 3GT as well, I think this is something that we will see more of in the future, if it really helps on fuel economy.

I've always seen the E92 as being optically heavy. In my view the car looks "fat" and heavy compared to the E90 and the E46 Coupe. The F32 however, did not look heavy (compared to modern cars of course), but well proportioned, with the typical BMW style. We were told that the car was approximately 8 cm (2,5 inches?) wider. Though it wasn't clear, I expect it was compared to the E92 and not the F30.

One of my biggest issues with the F30 is the hood and the "kink" that it has. It seemed that they had made it smaller on the F32, giving it a more natural flow. In the showroom it looked much better than my F30.

The interior was simply a copy and paste from the F30. I'm not saying that it's an exact match, but as we couldn't compare them directly, it was hard to tell the difference. I for one feel that it was the same as in my F30. Of course the rear part and front seats were different, but I didn't spend much time on that.

The boot was the expected size, though I felt that the opening was significantly smaller compared to the F30.

I was told that the engine bay had more space than in a E9x, but that is probably also the case in the F30. A couple of guys with E9x 335i's told me that BMW had changed the oil cooling on the car, but I don't know if that was already done on the F30 as well. One of the guys has modified his 335i to 555HK and 771NM (measured and documented by a trustworthy company). I don't know what translates to in US numbers, but its damn fast! He would have liked the modified oil cooling part. They also mentioned that the air filter looked very small and much more restricted than in the E9x, but that is probably the same in the F30.

The car was equipped with lots of equipment, but in DK that will most likely be extras. The price in DK is supposed to be just a tad more expensive than the E92.

I talked to several E9x drivers who love their car, but just as I, they would swap for the F32 in a heartbeat, if they could.
BMW will be releasing official details and pictures of the 2014 4 Series coupe any day now, stay tuned.

Why hasn't BMW released the 4 series to public yet? People need to start ordering soon. Does BMW do this with all their cars?

BMW is a little behind on the press release and base pricing. Ordering guides and US pricing is release about two months before the car goes on sale. What you're seeing is typical of BMW.

good news about the hood, we could all tell that was the case but good to hear about someone who saw it in person, who felt that same way about the F30 hood. Shame about the interior.

Jeez, they sure are taking their time announcing this thing officially. Maybe it wouldn't seem so slow if I wasn't waiting to buy one. I'm surprised someone hasn't taken some 'spy' pics at one of these dealer events or of it just driving down the road or out of the dealer, or something.

I'm assuming that these will be made with the new touch screen idrive controller? They gotta give us something new over the F30 for waiting all this time. Well, something new besides a cool new car that is. I mean some new technology.

would be nice if they were offering at least a different paint scheme, right now it looks like all they're going to offer is the same old white/black/EBII

I'm sure that's guaranteed. Rumors are that there will be the LED headlight option like on the 6 series too.

It will probably have some features that will be carried over into the F30 LCI.

Unveil the thing already. This secrecy at this stage is just silly. We know what it looks like.

This is killing me. I'm waiting for pricing so I can order. Trying for ED in early September. Hopefully that is possible! I have a small window of only a couple weeks!

I thought the 4 series was going into production mid July? Is this normal for BMW to wait until the last min for pricing? What do you guys think. Is the 4 series going to be under dealer allocation for the initial production run ?

The F32 is going to into production in July. It is normal that we don't have the pricing yet. We didn't get US pricing for the F30 until the end of November 2012, about 2.5 months until cars hit dealership showrooms. The F32 will hit showrooms in September, so July is about right for when we will see US pricing.

LED option on the 4-Series in not just a rumor - it's confirmed. After all, the order guide is already out - what's missing are the prices.

The price, the ability to order one and knowing what the car is actually going to look like. Minor details...

Yup. After all it's still a BMW - so what should go wrong?

Seems reasonable to me that the first production runs would be for the dealers with the goal to get new coupes onto the showroom floors in September so people can see them. The good news is that once they get the production bugs worked out, then they can build my 435i xDrive with all the goodies that I want on it. Believe me, I'm as ready to sign on the line as anyone here. I can't wait either. But it does give me more time to save some bucks to pay for this gorgeous car.

First hand look at the 2014 BMW 435i

I am trying to do ED in September on a 435 so all this waiting and uncertainty is torture! I would feel better if I could at least get pricing and nail down which board sponsor I'm going to use. I am hoping that the initial run doesn't come out of dealer allocation so I can have an easier time working up from euro invoice. Does anyone know how BMW usually handles allocations with "NEW" models ?

I agree, the comment was oriented to the fact that BMW is now promoting the concept in their websites.

To me it seems like both the X5 and 4-series are late with unveil and pricing. My last two EDs were on new models ( F10 & E60 lci ) and I ordered as soon a pricing was out which as I recall was at least two months before SOP and both cars were already unveiled. I would really dislike if my next car, the F80 will be this late with important details as price and official pix.

I can fully understand the frustration of the people waiting to order these cars. They are clearly fully baked and ready for unveil. It's just silliness from BMW at this point.
