Love it but wish it looked different from the F30 more. That rear isn't very "Coupe-y" as it is the F30 rear which I find too boxy-square for a Coupe but more appropriate for a compact-ish Sedan. It should be sleeker and more "voluptuous" rather than so "thin" and upright/utilitarian. The F30 rear plays very well on the character and message the F30 is supposed to send, but IMO is a turnoff on a Coupe. Being a "4 Series" BMW should have separated it from the F30 much more. Their marketing is way too unrealistically cocky by changing the name of a car who looks more like its 3-Series Sedan counterpart than any BMW 3-Series Coupe in recent history.

Also the rear quarter windows don't look right to me. I don't like the angular Hofmeister Kink and how long the window runs.

Other than that I do really love it, but was so in love with it during the development phase, so far I'm slightly let down. It certainly has nothing on the rich elegant look of the 6 Coupe (which is to be and should be expected, of course).

"...both a six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmission are available; the 428i xDrive can only be had with the auto 'box."

http://www.autoblog.com/2013/06/14/2...d-from-41-425/

And once again, BMW refuses to offer a 4-cylinder turbo, all-wheel drive with a manual transmission in the US. Not the X1, not the X3, not the 328xDrive, not the 428xDrive, not the 535xDrive, etc. I don't get it. If you live in a city in the US, you really can't use the power of a 335/435. I've driven a 335xi in Germany on unregulated stretches of the autobahn on a friend's European Delivery. Believe me, I get it. But in the US, all of that power is useless. the 328/428 is the sweet spot for value, performance, fuel economy, and weight. But with an automatic, it's just not interesting. Oh well...

First hand look at the 2014 BMW 435i

I'm going to reserve judgment until I see a couple of these in person, because most modern BMWs seem to look better that way, to my eyes, than they do in pictures.

That said, I was hoping for this car to look a little more exclusive, maybe like a smaller alternative to a 6 series, rather than a 2-door 3 series. A few of the details on that concept version really spoiled me. I had been figuring myself to cross-shop a 435 against an F10, but based on what I've seen so far, the car in person would really have to knock me out.

Also, I'm not opposed to the "lines" concept generally, but I continue to be disappointed at the extremely limited choice of interior colors on the M-Sport line. Black, tan, or red. Think how nice an Oyster/Black combination would look. Or Saddle.

Yes, I was hoping for a little more svelte styling as well. Overall its good, but could have been a little sexier. Its hard to tell from some pics though. It looks great in some of the pics from some angles and in others not so much.

It looks all curvy and sexy here

But not so much here

Is X drive really so important to you? I believe you can get N20 + MT combo if you skip X drive ...

I live in the Pacific Northwest. It rains here a lot, and I regularly drive up into the Cascades where that rain comes down as snow. If I lived in southern California or Texas or something, then I would definitely get rear-wheel drive. I used to have a BMW 330Cic and I found rear-wheel drive in Seattle was not the best match. Before that I had an Audi A4 Quattro and I currently have a BMW 2006 X3 3.0i manual (best of both worlds, manual and all-wheel drive).

What were you running for tires? I love my M3 in the snow with snow tires.

When would you expect ED to be available for the 4 series?

Sounds like it will be available from launch but will come out of dealer allocation so don't expect any crazy deals at first.

Thanks Tim. I figured I wasn't going to get any deals but my lease is up in September on my e92 335 and I have my heart set on the F32. In these situations will the dealers expect full US MSRP or will I be able to work out some semblance of a deal ?

That is going to depend on the dealership and what initial allocations are. No one knows that yet.

The latest word is that BMW says 11/1 to begin ED with cars to come out of dealer allocation.

Just be careful, and do not necessarily believe another CA just because they give you a date you want to hear...

What I didn't want to hear was November 1st. Is there a way to confirm this information myself?

Any of you are welcomed to take him to task on the date. I was hoping for/counting on a fall ED so November really puts a [Hofmeister] kink in things. I keep hoping they will revise the date.

+1. I was hoping fall ED as well. I don't quite get how the car starts production in July so technically a week or so after that they are completed yet we have to wait for November for ED. What if I placed one of the initial orders to be picked up stateside? Won't that be at my local dealer in September?????

Sadly and for an extra $3k. I don't usually spend nearly that on the trip. Surprisingly, airfare is only ~$400-500 cheaper in November than the ticket I just flew into Nice, France via Frankfurt a few days ago. I did my 07 ED for $400 round trip in late march/early April.

From what I can tell from reading in the "ask a dealer" section, it looks like dealers lose money by doing ED on cars that have to come out of dealer allocation. I think its something about them not hitting certain targets, but am not sure exactly how it works. A couple of the board sponsor dealers did state that, since it comes out of dealer allocation, do not expect the pricing we are all somewhat "accustomed" to (as in invoice + 500-750 before incentives).

I would imagine that if you guys went to a dealer and told them you would pay list price for one, but wanted to pick it up via ED, you might gain more traction. The fact that it did not come out of dealer allocation seemed to mean that they did not LOSE money doing ED's they just did not make very much. If they are going to actually LOSE money on them because of "back end" type stuff happening or not happening, there is zero incentive for them to do it... but money always makes things happen so I am sure if you throw enough their way, you can probably get whatever you are looking for.
