I have no idea what you are saying. Please try to be more specific in explaining what is going with your car. My thoughts now range from you have the wheel locked to dead batteries to anything else. More info is needed.

Sounds like your tumbler is toast.

Your ignition tumbler. The thing you put your key in.

You are my favorite. You might need to replace the battery. At the very least try to diagnose your alternator.

OP: Either your tumbler is bad or you need to wiggle the steering wheel.

Hey guys I just spent 400 on some tires and went to go start up my baby and... The key spins 360 forward(happens sometimes, but not all the time), so I spin it backwards around to lock it back in the off position. Then went to go start it again, this time the key didn't budge! Steering wheel is NOT locked, and it seems my radio/ instrument cluster remained on. And I couldn't get the key to spin at all. I could remove the key and insert it, just couldn't spin it. My steering wheel wasn't locked either . Anyone know what could be the issue? I just bought new tires and now this BS is happening!

Okay, if your key won't spin and your steering wheel is not locked, there is a 95% chance that you key tumbler is bad. It happens, it is not uncommon. For everyone, I have uploaded the realoem.com diagram of the steering column. It is part number 5 in the diagram. If you click here:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...09&hg=32&fg=30

You will get the full parts list as well, including the part number needed to order a replacement.

Ok, I looked up the part on bav-auto, and it comes with a key as well. Am I going to have to replace the door lock also? Is this even the right part number for a 1995 m3? : # 32 32 1 156 757

Most folks who don't want 2 different keys take the pins out of the old tumbler and insert them into the new tumbler. This is a delicate process, and might not be worth the hassle to you.

To add to Petriej's comment the diagram I gave you was for a 1995 M3 made in January. I have never had realOEM give me the wrong part number.

(*sigh*) I really don't want to post this.......but the saga of "Victoria" continues.

First thing first, thanks for the diagram, Jon.

Situation: My lock tumbler is bad. I'm having the same problem these cats had (did the free spin thing, went to where the ACC came on, and now the key won't move. It'll come out of the ignition, and the steering wheel will turn), and y'all already narrowed it down to the tumbler (well, Jon did). 1995 316i, by the way. Here's my question. IF....(*and this is a BIG if) I can maybe find one at the local junkyard with the key in it, is it a plug and play thing?? Meaning, can I put the "new" one in and it work right off the bat, or is the chip in the key gonna keep that from happening??

Also, if someone has a PDF of the removal instructions......I'd be eternally grateful.

The 95s had EWS, right? If so, I think it will work if you transfer the EWS chip in your current key to the donor key.

If by "EWS", you mean the huge plastic ring around the ignition.....then yeah, I got that. Is the chip pretty easy to get to??

Yeah, EWS is the security feature which pairs the car's ignition to the key. If there's a plastic ring with a wire connected to it, you have EWS. I've never swapped the chip before, but I bet it isn't that hard. There's probably some info online about how to do it.

"tire connected to it"?

I know you meant wire, Karl. May want to edit that or someone might get seriously confused!
