At a crossroad.
Since I know the AFM is shot.
Should I Squirt it now considering it does run. (I have Megasquirt)
Or get a AFM and hold off till I get through a couple weeks to insure everything is straight.?

What could possibly go wrong?

I think I would pass on the AFM, accept that you made the repairs right and squirt it now.

Good news... the TPS is fine.

I have 2 Throttle Bodies (I think I mentioned it before... I'm tired )
One which came with the reverse manifold and my stock one.

What I didn't notice or realize is that both are different.

One has a more complex linkage resulting in a larger sweep to get to WOT
The stock TB has a more simplified linkage with a shorter sweep to WOT.

Honestly except for the drive by wire TBs and the various TPS', I thought all m30 TBs were the same.

I will squirt the car. But to play it safe. I will go ahead and get a AFM anyway.
For if I run into any issues (not saying I will but I am a renewed believer in Murphy's Law)
I have the AFM to fall back on till I get it right.

Could also be the TPS. So I'm going to replace both.

Anyone have both local to Freehold, NJ 07728?!?
I am pretty sure I still have the AFM from my M30 engine. Need to look for it tomorrow after work. If you still need one, let me know. It's yours if I find it.

My price - just help me get rid of some engine blocks when I strip the head and oil pans off them. I can't lift them alone. There is a yard not far from here that will pay by the lb if I bring to him. I figure if I pull heads and crankshaft out, the weight should be manageable. One is the old M30. Other is M50 from my touring.

Thank you.
I haven't seen you and the family in a while anyway.
So it wouldn't be a problem either way.

It is nice when someone local to you shares the addiction to these cars. Few people understand it that don't share the experience. I am a middle aged father of two and my parents still want to know when I am going to grow out of this phase. Wives in my neighborhood also think I am a bit immature to be 'playing with cars' at my age and don't like their husbands hanging out with me too much.

Thankfully, my wife does not feel that way.

I am having trouble growing out of this phase as well Our electrician brought up my car the other day, he said " I bet you hate having to work on that BMW though". I told him I would MUCH rather work on the BMW than my much newer, but still very simple Dodge truck. I HATE having to fix that truck, it is a PIA to work on. The BMW on the other hand was built to be servicable, I LOVE that feature.

The ability to buy an old luxury car like this for cheap, and to be able to keep it on the cheap, for the most part is the reward. The other guys in the nieghborhood ARE jealous that you drive a sweet old BMW. It is much more fun, wrenching and all, over their certainly bland choices from the Japanese, Domestic or even Koreans. No KIA for me thanks I love my old BMW , it has nice leather, sunroof, real wood trim, nice stereo, it is fast and fun and eveyone thinks it is still a 20 thousand dollar car, HA! The fitting last laugh I think.

Me too, Joe. Me too.

So in review.

Label everything before removal. Even if you feel you know what goes where. Label it anyway.

3 cans of Brake clean and a 2 boxes of plain chore boy steel wool pads (no detergents) works like a charm.

A shop vac with a 10mm diameter hose duct taped to it works wonders sucking up crap in the block.

When rewiring double if not triple check them.

Be very very patient no matter how frustrated you get.

Lastly always have good friends at bay when you need to bounce ideas or need a hand.

Next a windshield, Paint, then boost (only because I don't want to compound a issue in case one raises it's ugly head... so far so good)

Plus I have to put money aside for a dolly and Penske truck for 7/30 (eta move date)

I did remove the throttle extension kit I bought from Jegs.
Not that it didn't work. But it started to give under the tension of the throttle cable and accelerator pedal.
So I took an idea from Jestermx over at BF.C and mounted a plate which sits both the stock cable holder and a piece of the Jegs unit.

Taking a cig and soda break I figured I'd drop a little but long update.
No pics yet to share but I have some prices and info for anyone doing the same maintenance and such.

Over the weekend I decided to tackle a drain and fill of the Diff.
It had been groaning and making noise at low speed for quite some time.
With time, the funds, cigarettes and a cold 2 liter Pepsi. It was time to do the service.

Being this was the first time being done under my 3-4 years of possession.
I was expecting the worst.
Reading many of the threads about it. One that stood out was this one.

DIY Differential Fluid Change w/ pics

So I went out to Schlep Boys and bought 2 liters of Mobile 1 LSD synth 75w90 and wandered
around the place looking for a 14mm allen key or hex socket.

Now if you read the thread many people swear by redline and royal purple.
With good reason, both are high quality and expensive stuff.
However I've done this service on my old e30. Mobile worked well then.
So it will do now. It's also 10 bucks cheaper on average.

After wasting about 20 minutes gawking at their revamped performance section,
(looking at a turbonetics t4 turbo in a display case) and not finding the socket or allen key.
I search every hardware and auto parts store in a 20 mile radius open on sunday.
I ended up at Sears where they got me for 45 bucks for a 4 socket set just to get that one 14mm socket.
Only to find out I didn't need any of them (I'll get to that)

The thread and service were cut and dry (hats off to the author) three things I will stress that were mentioned.

1. Open the fill plug first. Don't assume you'll get it open just to move on to the drain plug.
2. Get a 5-6 foot hose for the fill.
3. PB Blaster, WD40. Make sure you have it handy.

If you don't heed Point no#1. You'll be knee deep in Number two (poop).
The hose not only makes things easier but it's cheaper than buying the pump which I saw go for $15-20.
For you have zero room to fill directly from the bottle.
Plus it gave my wife something to do while the kids were in the yard.

Note to self: every non-car chick is a car chick waiting to blossom.

The last point is a given but needs to be said. You can strip the fitting and you'll be screwed literally.
Use your favorite penetration lube (KY lube is not applicable for this) to break them loose.
I was lucky mine broke free with no abnormalities.

The service went smooth, no more noise, smooth power transition, no leaks thus far.
However I did cheated. I only put the rear of the car on ramps
My not lifting the front, in hindsight, was kind of a risky check to see if the flange seals would leak.
Thank God they are not leaking.

The old oil wasn't as bad as expected.
It was low on gear oil but not nasty like expected.
I did learn I had a hole in my oil waste pan.
The strong odor will keep the feral cats, possums, raccoons, and other suburban wildlife away from my trash cans for a few weeks.

Back to why I didn't need the 14mm socket.
I suggest anyone attempting this actually look to see what size allen key or hex socket is needed.
It will save you the small change in the end.
I only needed a 10mm allen key. Which I already own.
Then again if you don't have the sockets or allen keys on hand and/or like new toys.
It can be a good purchase also.

I return the sockets and bought some hockey stick tape and ATF Fluid for my getrag 260.
The remaining will be added to my yarding expedition fund when I go to Atlanta this coming Monday.

The tape is for all the wires I had to run for the relocation of the ICV, AFM and the TPS.
I used this tape for it is very similar if not having the exact same consistency as the tape used for the E34 wiring harnesses.
It's also cheaper per yard.

Ok I've said enough.
Soda's finished.
Cigarette is done.
Time to head back out and finish the wire wrapping.

Pics coming.

It's over...maybe

I have a sad update... well maybe.

While driving home with my wife. A young kid blew the stop sign and hit the back of the car spinning us into a snow covered curb.

While waiting for the police I tried to move the car from the snow bank I couldn't engage the car into reverse.

However the important part is my wife and I are ok. We did get a ride to the hospital for her side hurt and she was shaken up.

The young guy seems to have a interesting driving record or as the police officers said "He's got quite a few incidents on his driving record."

Especially since he did not have his drivers license with him.

Kudos the Freehold Police Dept. for their assistance. But they let him go before I could get his insurance info.

However I have his plate number and I will get the other info tomorrow when I go get the police report.

All said. I'm worried they will total it out. I've read similar incidents where the insurance company totaled the car.

If they do, Stay tuned for the part out.

I'll keep everyone posted.

Man that sucks, they total cars for anything nowadays. My Jeep was totaled last week for being sideswiped. Only damage to the quarter and bottom of the door, and grinding in the rear end when driving.
If not, i hope his insurance pays out the wazoo for repairs.

Glad y'all are fine, but in a few days you never know what aches will show up.

Yeah it sucks balls right now.
Thanks guys and ladies (I know there are a few roaming) for the support.
Tomorrow or better said after I get my son to school I'm headed over to the police dept to get the driver's info if not the report.
Then I have to call a friend who owns a local shop. He knows my car and does the work I can't do in my driveway.
Have him pick the car up from the tow yard and drop it at his shop billing me till the other driver's insurance gets out to look at it.

Lastly I have to get a rental. All the while holding on to every receipt.

Am I pissed? At the time I was worried about the wife. Nothing else mattered.
Now that she is ok. I'm upset about the car. So I'm on angry insomniac mode.

Hello Mark. Yes the important thing is the Commissioner and I are ok.

I just left the police station and I have the report.
Last night I spoke to a friend who's a NY state trooper.
He's guiding me through the process in a more expeditious manner.

He's also a BMW enthusiast so he's more proactive on assisting me.
Hopefully all will be sorted out.

I think its time to step up your game! Your a man, in the face of adversity, we double down not fold....

As long as the wife doesn't know its a bluff lol.

If she ask's why "we" need another e34, id just reply.. "Your completely ok, right?.."

Thats why! Hahaha..

( just fyi, I think I've been close to here before.. Sadness over totaling my e36 ended up turning into pure determination for me to build a far better one using the motor and trans.)

You have 3x the value of a decent e34 in select highly desirable and rare components ready to go into a donor car!!!!

Time for a fresh start on the same old plan maybe.. ??
