Mileage Results on New 35I

Just thought I would share our initial Mileage results with folks. I have mentioned in other posts that we are normally restricted to city driving only. Initially we were considering an X5 but I read too many posts regarding 12MPG that we quickly ruled that out. We probably would have picked the X3 as it is really the perfect size for 2 folks with city driving and parking.

First 170 Miles. City driving with an average speed of 16MPH.

MPG = 14.8

Next 220 Miles. Strictly highway with and average speed of 72MPH.

MPG = 24.8

I am actually very happy with these results and hoped for the city results and actually getting better than I expected on the highway. Based on reading here, it looks like it will get slightly better after 4-5,000 miles.

Our former AWD CR-V only averaged 17MPG in the city and 25mpg on the highway. Currently have 500 miles on it and everything esle so good so far.

Those are pretty good highway numbers, gas mileage in the city can vary, if its stop and go traffic, it can get down to the low teens easily. Once you hit 5000 miles or so, it should go up maybe 0.5 to 1 MPG, but more noticable is the power increase after break in.

Even if it stays I'm very happy and compared to a make where mpg is a claim to fame. Our city driving has many lights and short overall distance. Under 3 miles and why I shut off the ASS feature. Still have the starter wear fear.

I have a very eclectic mix of driving over my first 2500 miles:
  • Expressway (speed limit 75 mph - I'll let you guess what my actual speed might have been)
  • US Highway - speeds up to about 65 mph
  • City (0-45 or so)
  • Paved and dirt country roads, some twisty
  • Elevation changes (5000-10000 ft)
  • Mix of settings (sport, comfort, eco-pro both auto and manual shift) depending on my mood (mostly comfort)
Average fuel consumption over the whole is about 24 mpg. And I expect that is about where it will stay unless I change my driving habits. I am reasonably conservative most of the time, so a big part of the fuel consumption figures comes from the elevation changes: 5000 ft of elevation change and 100 mi (there and back) just to get to the nearest Costco, Sams or Home Depot

24 mpg with a sh--eatin' grin on my face all the time? Yeah, I'll take it.

"have the starter wear fear" -- very interesting idea. I wonder if the premature failure of the starter motor/gears/spring has been taken into account in the quest for that illusive MPG bump with the start/stop mode. I suspect that there will be few to no failures until AFTER the OEM warranty has passed of course! Yet another reason (among many) to opt for the extended mechanical warranty -- BMW's not a third party's.

I did a lot of research and opted for a third party. Many factors but went with an exclusion policy (all covered except specifically excluded) and the BMW extended warranty does not cover gaskets and seals which I read is expensive. Hopefully I will not need it.

...and gaskets and seals are one thing that BMW really has not figured out how to do well. I'm hoping it is better on my F25/N55 but my E46/M54 always had gasket issues. I always would joke to the parts guy that I'd be willing to throw a party if I can keep my engine from leaking oil from some joint somewhere for a month!

Fingers crossed it's better on our new engine!

Hey Drewsky, see you in Tampa? See a space gray down town every few days. Is that you?

Possibly? I have been down there this week for jury duty so I was zipping through downtown. I'm pretty easy to spot. I've seen only one other X3 in town with M package (painted arches are the giveaway), let alone that I have a '14.

You either see me in that or my other bmw beast: a '06 K1200R, of which I am the ONLY one in town!

Very happy with this on the highway. Air was set at 80 degrees too. Same as she use to get on her CR-V.

We just came back from a long trip, 3 people in the X3 plus luggages, average about 80 mph on the highway and got about the 25 MPG.

Thanks for the report. My biggest fault are Jack-Rabbit starts. That kills goods mileage.
I had the X up to 80-85. It handles like a champ.

with conservative driving, I get about 29 mpg with about 60 mph for about 16 mile commute. It seems to be really good and at par with my former 2013 RDX ( one of the reason I bought it)
Bob gave me a nice recommendation for extended warranty and i will buy it in couple of months. Thanks Bob.
