2002 bmw x5

I bought a 2002 bmw x5 recently with 170000miles on the clock and paid $9,700 for it. Later on I found out its very faulty with issues left right and center. I took it a reputable mechanic who has a repuation of being really good on bimmerfest.com and he said to get rid of it? I really like it what should I do?

Looks like you've got 3 options:
a. Listen to your mechanic
or
b. pay him for the repairs, IF, he even wants to work on it.
or
c. Find out how to do the repairs yourself.

I'm guessing you can't take it back to the seller.

Thta's not good if a tech tells you to get rid of it.
But what kinda problems we are talking here, trans, timing chain guide, valley-pan leaks, etc etc etc??

OP - Try listing the problems you are faced with and maybe board members can share their experiences or suggestions.

I am sorry to say this but they saw you coming and were laughing when you left... $9700 for a V6 X5 with 170k on the clock?? 2 months back I bought a 2001 with 167K on the clock...the 4.4i for $7500 that had a few issues (needed a camshaft position sensor, an air injection pump and a condenser fan. I purchased the parts and my mechanic put them on for $120.00) all total $650.00 including parts. The guy had it listed for $8900 but when I took him the KBB pricing for a private seller he had to match it to get the sale. I have the pictures posted for it in show us you seX5's here on Bimmerfest.

No need to bash the OP about what he paid. Sadly, if he paid too much - it's something that happens. People live and learn.

Sadly, your response is not helping him with his issue. I also noticed that he is located in Edmonton? Could that be Edmonton, Alberta? If so, pricing is different up in Canada.

OP - List your issues and let's see what we can come up with.

The I-6 M54 is proven, I know someone is driving 300k-mile X5 at different forums, I have V8 myself and it's fun to drive but gas mileage sucks; so nothing is perfect.

For I-6 I'd check sludge problems, usually CCV (crank-case ventilator) need to be replaced, cooling like WP/thermostat is next. Maybe valve-cover gasket is leaking. Other than that I-6 will run forever.

Fixed, but what's ^ this?
Straight 6-cylinders engine, aka I-6, NOT V-6
Let's see the issues list.
