"Adjuster Units", what does what?

I have the infamous rattle with my 2006 3.0si N52. I've pulled the DISA out a couple times (the one on the intake manifold side of the engine above the throttle body). Seems to be in working order, flap isn't loose or broken.

I've pored over diagrams on realoem because I still can't seem to find the ICV in real life. I see it on the diagram, but can't find it under the hood. But that's a side note...

It looks like there is another unit (realoem calls it the same thing as the DISA: "adjusting unit"). It is on the other side of the intake manifold, going into the crank-case). Anyone know what that is? I feel like I figured it out once, but can't remember. My mind was probably muddled with one of ten projects I'm usually doing at once on the car while I've already pulled stuff out, or as glues/paints dry.

Rattle hasn't been as bad as the weather warms up. But then again, it's only June... We might still get snow
