Ceramic Brake Pads rear Z4 35is 2012

Has anyone changed out their rear brake pads for ceramic ones on a 2010-2013 Z4 35is??

Hawk Performance has them listed but they are wrong as they are about 10mm too short in height. Looking for another brand that is correct.

No, you can change just the pads. I was able to get the correct front and rear in Ceramic and still with great stopping power for less than $175 for the complete set. Seems reasonable to me, but could be Big Bucks's $$$$$$$$$ to someone else.

My bad- I wasn't aware of a ceramic pad only. So its not the entire system just a pad. If a $175.00 was big bucks to me I woudn't be in a Z4 forum , I'd be in the KIA forum!!!

I think you maybe in for a relative shock with what you can do in replacing the rear pads. They are special as BMW Z4 has electronic parking brake and you need a software tool to release the motor that drives the pads to replace them. Plus the rear pads are a completely different design and cannot be replaced as a DIY, the software also needs to be coded to say the brake pads have been replaced as this also controls the drive motor distance travel.....
Fronts pads are no problem as they are the normal replacement procedures !!! You still have to tell the car that you have changed them, done in the Idrive menu!!!

I've heard that before about needing a special tool to release the e brake. Why would it need releasing if you don't activate it? I had my front and rear calipers completely removed, pistons blown and pads removed by an indy shop. I'm pretty sure they don't have any proprietary BMW software and the disassembly and reassembly went fine.

There is an excellent document on here about the E89 written by BMW, think it comes as a PDF. It describes in detail the braking system especially the electronic parking brake. When changing the pads to new the drive motor for the parking brake has to be rewound to allow the new pads to be fitted...... This has to be done with the software to retract the screw drive, doing it manually will definitely lead to damage, although a couple of guys have tried...... As for your Indy ???? I clearly cannot comment!!!

Well that might explain it. My pads weren't changed, only removed and put back, so no adjustment of the e brake necessary.

I was able to pull the rear calipers off with removing the electric parking brake. Pads I bought were identical to the originals except for ceramic. They went on fine and calipers went back on fine. Did not have to turn the piston back in as the car only has 300 miles on it and the new pads were the same thickness. Now if they were worn, I can see your point. Where is this PDF you are referring to??
