Thanks! I know I've had it for a month and already had to replace water pump and thermastat ($900). Now im starting to notice that right when I turn my car on there's mild smoke coming out of the grille and smells like burnt rubber..after a minute it goes away..you know anything like this?

Pop the hood and investigate,I assume you have changed the oil and filter,do you have the owners manual?if so,start reading and get to know your car.

That depends on how the car has been serviced in the past, any service records, you can run a check with your vin #,what are you using the car for?Do you drive it everyday?

Yes it's always been serviced at bmw. Nothing major though. Brakes, wipers, tires, things like that. Never been in a accident as well. And it's my daily driven, so yes I drive it everyday. But only to school work and gym stuff like that. Roughly 30 miles a day

Actually the water pump and thermostat are two of the leading culprits at that mileage so it's nice that those are now out of the way.

My first guess is your serpentine belt. If it's slipping a bit, it will smoke. As it heats up due to slipping, the rubber gets sticky and then it grips and stops slipping.

If that's what's going on, then you would probably need a new belt and tensioner.

Or, the belt and tensioner may be fine, and you may have a stiff idler pulley. This can cause the same thing to happen.

Hmmm. That sounds like my problem. It only happens right when I turn my car on and it smokes a little and smells like burnt rubber. How much you think it'll be

No, it has a timing chain. The timing chain in your BMW is a double row chain with double sprockets. It is a robust and reliable design. Assuming reasonable maintenance, the chain should last the entire life of the engine.

The serpentine belt runs your accessories (alternator, steering pump, etc). It has nothing to do with the camshafts.

How would I know if one of these went bad and what are the consequences

The best way to check a serpentine belt is to get a flashlight and look down at the inside of the belt (engine off). Do you see cracks in the belt? Are there voids in the belt, where small chunks have fallen out?

Then start the engine. Do you hear a squeal, or other unusual noise coming from the belt area? This may indicate a belt that is worn.

Do you hear a growling or crunching sound? This could be a bad belt tensioner.

The good news is that belts and tensioners are reasonably priced, and not very difficult to replace.

The bad news is, if you ignore a failing belt, you will lose your alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioning compressor.

I don't see anything! Everything looks fine
