Reassessing ASS

90% of my driving in L.A. is stop and go -- averaging ~12 mpg city as a result. Although I had my car reprogramed to remember the last ASS state I find using ASS in the city is my only hope of stabilizing mileage. I usually drive in Comfort mode, Eco Pro is a bit restrictive IMO. I suppose anyone driving stop and go experiences miserable mileage too? Any tricks or solutions?

Stop and go is a no-win situation for any ICE. If you really want to save in that situation, go electric. It's the only way.

I might look at a Leaf for my short commute. It seems ideally suited, letting me enjoy the 335 on weekends or anything longer than a few miles.

In virtually 100% stop and go inner city Chicago traffic I average 12 - 13 mpg with my NA high-output N52.

It is what it is. Unless you get an electric car, you are going to burn tons of fuel in stop and go. I know of no gasoline engine that is going to give you good mileage in such a situation.

Stop-n-go is where I think the AH3 has a very unique advantage.

Unique is an on or off state. Something can't be very unique...just like it can't be very dead. Unique is one of a kind. So it either has a unique advantage, or a very rare advantage, or an uncommon advantage, etc.

Carry on

Thanks for confirming it's not my particular car or driving style that's culpable. I do find using ASS marginally slows the declining mileage average and I do want to share that.

Yes, I've been sing Eco Pro in some of my driving and it does make a difference. It also makes the car more docile in stop and go creeping.

In California, all-electric (and certain other types) qualify for a carpool lane pass, which let's you use the carpool lane as a single user. In the Bay Area, the carpool lane is a genuine lifesaver (sanity saver?) on a commute. A friend just leased a Ford Focus for 2 years @ $199/mo, plus got a huge federal tax credit. When you consider the value of your time wasted, plus the gas, it's a no brainer.

My wife and I carpool, or I take the motorcycle, or I take the mountain roads, otherwise we'd have an all-electric too! Actually, truth be told I was considering the Tesla S at the same time as the 335i.

12mpg doesn't make sense.. I'm getting about 18mpg with about 80-90% stop and go traffic in my '11 335 with no ass?

Exactly, according to on-board monitoring I am averaging 23 MPG in similar traffic without ASS and in comfort mode. I'm pretty heavy on the gas when I get clear traffic too.

Observing break-in period, only have 900 miles. Hopefully my mileage will increase as the car breaks in. In West Hollywood I rarely get clear traffic. Average trip may be 16 MPH. You can't imagine how log jammed traffic is here. And other posters confirm similar poor mileage in stop and go traffic.

That's pretty low mpg for stop and go traffic. In my old E46, I averaged 16 mpg on HPDE days on the track. I'm running around 30 mpg in stop and go traffic, in Sport mode.

Reassessing ASS

Something doesn't sound right... According to my on board computer with around 4000 miles in my F30 335i xDrive in mostly comfort mode, mostly tamed driving with some aggressive - Total average is 21mpg. Premium petrol (93) and mostly city driving. I commute through NYC back and forth daily.

My commute is a lot of stop and go and I'm getting 22.5 mpg with A.S.S turned on. I'm sure your traffic situation is worse in LA, but I'd expect you to do better than you are now. I'm still in the break in phase too (700 miles).

My stats are:
912 miles
11.5 mpg (average)
12.3 mph (average)

I can get 19+ on some trips but even freeways in L.A. are stop and go. Is anyone averaging anywhere near as low as 12.3 mph combined in a span of 900 miles like I am? Going to do some controlled experiments in better (less) traffic before pressing the panic button.

I actually watch the MPG gauge, as accurate as it may or may not be. It makes me a little more conscious of my driving, although the car just seems to just want to accelerate quickly and I feel like I should oblige.

Traffic in L.A is horrifically bad (so is traffic in San Francisco). San Diego can be pretty bad as well, but "bad" is all relative. I spent 4 months in Kentucky on a business trip once, and what everyone called bad traffic there (and complained about) was not even "average" bad traffic here, and certainly not west hollywood traffic.

I am so glad I do not have to go up to LA much, lol

I don't think I've ever reset my MPG, so mine is based on just about a month of driving in many different scenarios. I'm getting about 25mpg, which is noticeably better than my E90.

As usual, most of the driving is to/from work. My commute both ways includes pretty heavy traffic, but also some normal freeway and city driving. I tend to use mostly comfort, but I do switch to Eco when I get to the bumper to bumper traffic. But I still leave ASS off.

Eco Pro definitely makes a difference, even without ASS. My one way commute is only like 15 miles, and having Eco Pro on for about 3/4 of the drive, I recently "saved" about 3 miles according to the monitor. Comfort, and especially Sport, makes you accelerate much faster than needed in bumper to bumper traffic. Eco Pro slows everything down and basically forces you to accelerate like a 90 year old. Over time, it makes a difference. I suggest trying it.
