Geez, did I stumble into the Prius forum? Driving a BMW is about smiles per gallon, first and foremost, with miles per gallon an issue only in 24-hour races. Of course, that's easy for me to say, with my detuned engine in my new F30 320i. I have my share of stop and go in rush hour cycles but my mpg is usually over 30 mpg, in sport mode, with ASS on--my one concession to rush hour traffic.

Your mileage doesn't sound right to me. Something is amiss...I also live in LA, and sit in terrible traffic going through downtown LA every day, in the peak of rush hour. My typical mileage is 26. One tank that was almost 90% E85 I got 19. My wife (not an economical driver) gets over 17 in her e90 N52 car, which is nowhere as efficient as our N20 cars. So something is going-on with your car. Do you reset the MPG reading in the computer with each tank?

I generally reset mileage on fill up. Would you mind posting your average MPH, that way there's something concrete to compare. Thanks!

I'm sorry, but I have to ask ... can you elaborate a bit? I can't understand what that means - I certainly hope it doesn't mean 85% ethanol 15% gasoline E85.

I think the AH3 makes a lot of sense in LA. Seriously considering a change in this direction down the road. 80% of my driving is also in LA street traffic (ie 14 MPH average and that includes the 20% of freeway at 65 or so). Also the Active Cruise which in MY2014 is available on the AH3 I believe, also with M-Sport.

That's the car I'm thinking for Los Angeles: AH3, Active Cruise, M-Sport. Great for the reality of every day and also will open up a bit when I finally get some space to drive occasionally...

Yes I do run a mix of e85 (85% ethanol and 15% gas) and 91 octane. Based on my research, it appears to me that the 328i is flex fuel - see option code S1AEA.

Yes I will look it up but I am not sure my trip computer reads that small of increments

Good call! Test drove AH3 and loved it (expensive but what's not to love) but I thought the F30 would attain better city mpg than it does.

I am so glad I do not have to go up to LA much, lol
+1 - I'm in the Dallas area and thought we got some bad traffic, but a recent visit to LA showed me I had no idea what I was talking about. I spent an hour creeping from the airport on side streets and barely moved on the map and it appeared everything was "normal".

To simulate:

Go outside
Get in your car
drive to the local grocery store and back (say 5 miles)
pull into the driveway
sit for one hour with the engine running randomly revving it up a bit every 30 seconds or so
Record your mileage

Just did a 15 mile loop combined city and highway and my results marginally improved.
28 mph (average)
18.5 mpg (average)

Word! Even when NAV takes me on an occasional wild goose chase I gotta chuckle.
