Whats with all the Mods?

I bought the three Bimmers I have owned because they are a Modified car in a sense, different then my 1968,327Camaro,Nissans,Hondas,and the american made cars I have owned,I bought a Bimmer because they are well made and driving is a pleasure, they are built to last and the last thing I want to do is screw around with perfection,Lets face it,you cant just decide to throw on an exhaust system and think it will make you faster or install a fancy cone shaped air filter and think you'll gain horsepower,if you want mods then do your homework and spend the money you really need to spend to make a difference on your Bimmer, just my opinion, peace.

It's all cost/benefit. Cost bring in terms of money, longevity, and economy. Benefit is in the eye of the beholder. Generally speaking, mods - performance or cosmetic - aren't "worth" anything. If you are willing to pay x price for y, why not? But that's not the point. Leave me alone about my $1500 custom alcantara headliner. And leave the guy who wants to put a $1200 BMW performance exhaust alone too.

If anything, the only thing that puzzles me is people who expect to pay little and receive great gains. I'm not advocating you get what you pay for... more like you don't get what you don't pay for.

Probably right. Discussions about subjective concepts in terms of right and wrong tend to end badly. I'll stop now.

I have to disagree with you on this one, man.

I have installed a few performance mods on my car, and they DO make it better for me. I run a Cobb tune on my car because it gave me more power, much more power. How much you ask? Well, the data log and Virtual Dyno show 350 whp and 397 wtq. The Cobb AP performance monitor showed a 0-60 time of 3.9 sec. I have no idea what my 1/4 mile time would be because I don't really care. But this added power has given me a lot of added enjoyment, which is my ultimate goal. I installed bigger capacity aftermarket front mount intercooler. Why? Because it lets me run a more aggressive Cobb tune, which adds to my enjoyment. I installed a "fancy cone shaped air filter" (actually a dual cone intake from aFe). Does it add power? Probably not, or not enough to feel it. But it does make my car sound better, and that too adds to my enjoyment.

Am I done with the mods? Probably not. Why? Because I choose my mods carefully, I know what to expect for my money, and they too will add to my enjoyment of my car.

It's human nature to get used to the good things we have quickly and to start yearning for more enjoyment. It's as simple as that.

Whats with all the Mods?

Eh, guess some of us don't want the headaches of turbos after warranty but got tired of the car sounding like it doesn't have a pair... Counting the 2,600 on mods and install plus what I paid when the car was new would have gotten me a 335i easily. However it's my car and I made it special for what I want. They make the mods and a variety of flavors of 3 series because the consumer likes choices... One engine choice, one choice of wheels is boring vanilla. Might as well buy a toyota / Honda product...

Don't have anything against tastefully done mods, "carlsontheflyer" likes the mods he did to his car and it seems to me that some thought went into what he did.My father was a custom auto body painter and I saw many mods on all types of cars that he painted and got to appreciate what a good mod really is....

As I have posted in the recent past, I don't do mods. I significantly research then order vehicles exactly as I want them to be equipped, then enjoy them. No regrets, no computers puking because of a mistake(s).

Seriously?

If your are spending money on mod's to impress others, don't. If you are spending money on mod's to please yourself, your pocketbook and good sense is your limit. I've dropped a measly 2.5K on mod's, the most $$ spent on my BMW PE, the rest being little niceties. The PE looks nicer and definitely sounds nicer. And yes, it does add a little zippiness to the throttle response. Did I do it to wow anyone? Nope. I just like listening to a throaty car, and I like knowing I'm the one making the music.

Except for my LUX H8 LED angel eyes, all my mods are still BMW-OEM parts. Modding can be done without sending the ECU into cardiac arrest or code overload.
