Thanks, it just came to me after reading the post. Must be a better b-word: Bruises my Wallet, Berates my Wallet? Someone else will likely come up with a better one

W being warning light must have a lot of better options too - hopefully this thread lives a while

Maybe, or...

I deal with cars on a daily basis. I don't fix them, but I test them for emissions. I own an emissions testing station. I've been doing this for 6 years now, over 7,000 cars per year. My station is in one of the more affluent sections of Atlanta, I test more BMWs, Benzes, Audis, Lexuses (or is it Lexi?), Jags, Porsches, etc, than run of the mill Corollas or Civics.

I can tell you for sure that I have seen at least as many Lexuses, Toyotas, Infinitis, Hondas fail inspections as BMWs. Every time I see a newer, so-called high end Japanese car pull in with the CEL glaring at me from the instrument cluster, I chuckle.

As a matter of fact, the highest mileage car that I've ever tested was a BMW. It was 2 years ago, and it was a 1987 535is with 961,000 miles on the odometer. That's right folks, just under a million miles. The owner bought the car new, and it was still running on the original engine, and had never been rebuilt. Obviously things like the starter, alternator, water pump, thermostat, etc., had been replaced, but other than that, nothing but hoses, belts and gaskets. It was an automatic, so it was on it's 3rd transmission, but he was still getting about 300,000 miles out of each tranny.

Guess what? It passed the test with flying colors. In Georgia, vehicles 25 years or older are exempt from testing, so that was the last time I tested it, but I still see the owner driving it around here.

Which station? The guy in John's Creek I went to last was obviously not impressed my BMW is an auto.. was going to explain I have several cars and his assistant tested my track car the day before but it seemed too much hassle to explain

If I were the only driver the BMW would be a manual too

My station is in John's Creek (technically). Right at the corner of Nesbit Ferry and Old Alabama. It's called "Happy Birthday Emissions", same plaza as The Derby Pub, next to a Volero gas station. Can't miss it. If you see my car parked there, stop by for some bimmer talk. Although now that it's very hot and sunny, my car is under a cover usually.

To which station did you go? Who's that jerk?

Wow, you are super close, the Kroger we use is across the road

I drove around for ages last time looking for one without a ramp - it was somewhere on Jones Bridge IIRC but I barely ever leave Roswell/ South Alpharetta these days

Unbelievably I didn't know the Derby Pub was there but have heard of it. I tend to go to Harp. We moved to Roswell from East Snob in 2006 and into this house about three years ago... guess we need to check out what's around sometime (it has OEM wheels on right now)

BTW I put your valve pic on Facebook and it was shared at least once already. If I see your car I'll stop by, I tend to drive the MX-5 in summer - am pretty sure it's the only silver one with that rollbar around locally (it has OEM wheels on right now)

Ho ho ho

Well the truth is

- Porsche electronics made by Bosche same company produce for BMW .... So possibly same problem later on
- Lexus is the one non German made that drives almost like German and more reliable (Infiniti in the same league)
- and if I decide to say with the brand then e46 is a good option

Lexus drives like a German car? Are you serious? Lexus is the numbest car I've ever driven. Hell, even a FWD Acura gives you more feedback than a Lexus. I test drove an IS350, and I felt nothing, not from the steering, nor the suspension, nor brakes, nothing. I felt as if I was sitting in front of a TV. It should be renamed X-BOX350. If any Japanese car feels close to a BMW, it's the Infinity G37. Close, but no cigar.

And speaking of Porsche. Just 3 or 4 years ago it was rated by JD Power and by Consumer Reports as #1 in reliability, beating out all the usual suspects. Look it up.
