Just hit 60,000 miles. Transmission Service?

I just recently hit the 60k mark on the car and I was wondering if any of you guys have done the transmission oil and pan change for the AT-equipped cars. I would appreciate it if I can get advice for which fluid to use for the AT and the part number for the pan.

The oil is not cheap, about $200 I think.

Here is a kit with oil and pan from ECS Tuning.

Here is decent thread on transmission oil but there are many out there if you do a search.

I had my pan replaced at the dealership due to a small drip. No further problems. If you are not leaking or low on fluid I would suggest not doing anything. Somethings are better left alone. And yes, the replacement fluid is not cheap.

When I hit 50k miles I had the brake fluid done by my Indie. I asked him about changing the trans fluid then. He's a former dealer service guy. He said unless there is some problem, don't mess with the trans. I like that he just didn't just take my $$$ and do the fluid change. I think I'll take his advice.

I have a 99 ford expedition with 260k mikes and the trans is just fine.

When my 7 series hit that level, I changed mine. I was very happy with the outcome and sold the car at +200,000km with no tranny issues. About a $400 job at an Indy. The dealer calls the fluid "liquid gold" and licks it up with a special lock because its to expensive. Lol

Thanks to all of you guys for your input. I thought about this and decided that I'm going to have an Indy do the transmission service as good preventative maintenance.

My Indie advises against doing this oil change...They claim that there is a possibility that the smooth gear changes are lost, and that changing the oil will not help in the majority of cases get past the 150K miles before transmision intervention is required...My 650 is at 63K miles and my 325xi, is at ~160K miles, never had the transmission oil changed, or had an intervention yet...fingers crossed...

Hi, I don't have a 6 but we have the same tranny. I got my fluid change kit from here http://www.thectsc.com/index.php?p=c...parent=50&pg=1. I also replaced my mechatronic sleeve while I had the car up since the dealer had told me it was leaking. I then followed the DIY here (pics don't work) http://forums.5series.net/diy-do-you...-refill-88129/ for the fluid filling.

It really quite easy doing just the fluid. There's a drain hole and a fill hole and here's the tightening pattern for the new pan http://www.thectsc.com/index.php?p=p...e_id=tech_info.

But for $400 at an Indy that's only $150 more than the kit, not a bad deal either, especially if you don't have a lift available.
