Replace CV Joint Boot

Hi - My husband will be replacing the CV joint boot on our 325xi. According to the Bentley manual we'd need a special tool (33 2 111/116/117). If we're not going to replace the axel, is the special tool required?

If the boot has been ripped for a while, it's false economy to replace the boot and not the entire axle shaft.

You could just repl boot but why bother? Just get a new axle and swap it in. Its just not worth the effort to do boot only. Esp if the axle is old.
