Fair price for an '03 540i 6 speed 72k miles

It has full records, and is in excellent condition. A friend of mine might be willing to sell it to me, and I'm just trying to figure out a fair price.

I'd say 12-15 IF it is well taken care of and a PPI checks out.
(IE cooling system done and other misc stuff)

I'd go to autotrader put in 2003 540i and search the whole country (there will be under 60 results) and generate a price on this.

Yea id expect 11.5 at least

with out the cooling system... your going to have to do that your self... you cant exspect someone to fix the car to how you want it.. so you can buy it..

Yeah kbb, doesn't seem to take demand into consideration. Something an enthusiasiam isn't a stat to or way to determine value to them. That being said I'd guess 12k+ if It's as good as you say it is.

KBB, NADA, and Edmunds are worthless...search autotrader, cars.com, and ebay and look at asking prices....all 2003 540i 6-speeds are M Sports.....if it has had no previous accidents and no paint or bodywork, id say its worth around $15k, maybe more depending on color combo and service history.

Whatever the price is, add about 1K onto that for a cooling system overhaul

The car is worth what someone is willing to pay.

Post an ad on the BMW CCA classified page. The BMW cognoscenti read that.

FWIW, a local guy is asking 20K for his on CL. He didnt indicate what if any preventative maintenance has been done other than it has new tires. Oh, his is an automatic and not a manual.

I just picked up an '02 with 76,000 for 12,000. It has a lifter knock and iI'll want to replace it that. While I'm in there I'll replace them all on both sides and might add a throttle body upgrade. All-in-all though, it's in pretty good shape, inside and out, minus the usual dings and a little curb rash on all four rims. Hope that helps.

Since I am currently in the market for 2003 with about that miles....I would say around $15k would be fair. Since I am a buyer not a seller I wish the price was lower but it is getting fairly hard to find a decent car that doesn't have a bunch of miles. You can certainly find a few nice ones at dealers but they want crazy money for them. The key is it being a 03 not an older one. Also I would say being a 6-speed I would put more value into that versus an auto

I spoke with him and I think he is just saying 20K to see what happens, I am sure he would negotiate

FYI, 95% of the people reading this thread probably farm their work out. So TBH, it is 2-3K. Don't mislead the newbs

OP's car needs pix

Thanks for all of the responses. The car is black on black. I'm actually thinking of buying it from a friend of mine, not selling it. Everything on the cooling system has been changed except for the water pump.

I checked the car out a bit more, and it needs some front suspension work, bushings and tie rod ends.

The steering is also doing one weird thing. The power steering sometimes seems to lose all boost at low speed and gets very heavy, but it doesn't do this every time. I'm guessing the power steering pump, but it seems odd that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. The power steering hoses have all been replaced and appear to be in good shape. Any thoughts on this?

I bought all of my own parts online with direction from cn90 (a quality member here) and the parts alone were much more than $400 so this kit certainly doesn't contain all the needed parts to do a full overhaul. I redid everything in the entire cooling system though. With the indy doing the work, it cost a total of around 2k again with ALL parts swapped out.

You guys are on crack if you're willing to pay $15K for a 540i. You can get an 02-03 M5 in good condition for that kind of money.

Also, I would assume that your friend is selling has been abused a couple of times in the road~
