Try eBay you may find a great deal on older version.

Define "not working." Is the display dead, does the controller not work, can't see maps, can't find points of interest, ... ?

Do you have a coupe or sedan? The MY2009 sedan received the newer, hard-drive based iDrive system that only needed DVDs (now, a USB stick) to update the maps, not navigate. I am not sure when the coupe got the new system.

If you have the DVD-based system you can probably find a great deal on a set of older DVDs. If you have the HD-based system and it needs some repair other than a map update, you might want to just buy a Garmin.

The 2009 is not DVD based (no E9x had a CD based system). The data and programming are all on a hard drive in the dash. Prior to 2009 it was DVD based. If you really can't get it to function at all, then there is probably something significantly wrong with the CIC unit.

It sounds like you'll need to have a dealer look at it. You said it's out of OEM warranty, but when you bought the car, did it come with a CPO warranty? If so, I believe the malfunctioning Navi should be covered - but not the cost of an upgraded map which is about $200.

I hope you're right as I've heard $600+ for an upgrade...and the "new gen" nav can't be upgraded by the user, only the dealer (extra $?)...nice way to avoid those cheap Ebay upgrade deals!

Let's keep our fingers crossed for the OP that it's covered by the CPO warranty.

Map updates are around $200 from the dealer including the FSC (activation code) and can positively be installed by the owner. I updated mine as soon as the most recent version was released, a few months ago (in fact I was the first to order from my dealer). The updates are now delivered on a USB flash drive and installation is simplicity itself.

Now if by "new gen" you are not referring to the E90 platforms and meant the really new iDrive starting to appear in the current models...that would be an infuriating backward step if they removed the update feature.
