E9x Automatic Shift Knob replacement?

Looking for a DIY to replace the shift knob on my automatic... The "chrome" is rubbing off and looks like hell. I would like to replace the knob, but I have tried yanking up on it like I've seen posted online, but I gotta say I'm afraid I'm going to pull the thing out of the floor. Something doesn't seem right.

Suggestions?

When I dropped a coin behind the ashtray, I also attempted to remove the shift knob. After yanking on it for 30 minutes, I gave up and removed everything around it. It just wouldn't budge.

Some people have had success by bracing their arm on the center console and then giving the knob a very sharp yank. Just make sure you don't have any body parts (like, say, your head) in the removal path.

E9x Automatic Shift Knob replacement?

Have you tried a quick/sharp yank? I just replaced mine about a month ago and was very afraid I would break it as well. I think I put it in neutral (with parking brake set of course) so it was pointing straight up (perpendicular with the console). It only took one try.
