Is the X5 diesel really that bad??

Living in the DC area I was on cars.com and noticed tons of X5d's for sale. Is something wrong where eveybody is selling them? I know nothing about them but just something I noticed is all.

What's the percentage of diesels to others in X5 sales in the area?
Diesels made something like 30% of total X5 sales for past years, so you might be noticing them particularly because you are looking at them, and there ARE lots of them to sell.

I have a 2012 X5 35d that is just this month one year old with 9,200 miles on it and I do like the vehicle a lot, much more on the highway than around town. It can be a little sluggish in heavy slow stop and go traffic like that of DC and the heavy steering gets tiring. The only issue I have had and which is currently as I type this being addressed again is alignment. In 9200 miles I have devoured 2 sets of front tires, they were actually shot at the 2,000 mile mark. My only other gripe would be the nav, its TERRIBLE.

Well....mainly the nav but I'm driving a 2013 535i loaner right now with the new "BMW Connected Drive" iDrive and it is leaps and bounds nicer than the 2012 iDrive. That being said navigation in any German car I have owned or been in has sucked.

Good to know. I was thinking about a 2011 X5 with M sport package but think I'll hold on to the 2014 Jeep Grand Cheorkee Overland for the time being....

I wouldn't let just the crappy nav keep me from buying the X5, overall its a really nice truck, quirks like any vehicle I suppose.

Hope the wait on the Grand Cherokee is enjoyable. A little over a month and I've added 1,600 miles to the 2012 X5d for a total of 12,500. Zero problems and zero regrets here. I think I made the right choice.

Hi there! I have my second diesel BMW X5 and I love it! I trade in my Lexus LX 570 for BMW X5 diesel 2010 with 18K miles on it certified. That car was loaded with all options available. I drove that car up to 46K miles within one year and trade in for 2012 BMW X5 diesel, which I built from BMW factory.
So far I have never problem with navigation or other electronics on the car.
If you say the navigation is bad on BMW you should compare with Lexus for instance. The navigation on Lexus does not allow you to put in any additional addresses or info - you must completely stop your car and than to type in! The BMW's navigation is shows you the life traffic situations on you way to destination. And that's free! The Lexus charge you for this service after first year if I not mistake or after 3 months.
I agreed with others the car has heavy steering wheel and delay in less a second when you accelerate kick down. And like Car & Driver said in the compare test SUV diesels in US market , X5 diesel has loud engine which you have not hear on the high ways journey!
I like the car and like free service, free maintenance and other good small things from company and driver's oriental SUV.
I put 23K miles on my 2012 BMW X5 since last September and just like it a lot and want to stay with BMW in the future.
Please take this statement from real person about a real car in these days.
I respect all others opinion!
Enjoy summer time with BMW!

Wow, you're right! My last comment sounds completely cocky and wasn't intended so I apologize for that. I meant that I like the connected drive prefer an X5 with that feature is all. Nothing against the X5 at all. I love it actually and plan on getting the X5 next year anyway. At any rate, I'm glad you guys are enjoying the diesels. Seems like a really solid engine.

I have had my 2012,X5 30d (different models here) for 15 months. Frankly, its brilliant. Most of my driving is city and suburbia. When its long distance, its 300 miles + It's just such an easy vehicle to live with, always a pleasure to drive and is great for towing my 19' boat. All round, probably the best I have had ....and that includes 2 RR Sports. I will not drive anything else other than a BMW now.

I searched a long time to find the X5 diesel, and I am very glad I did. I was on the hunt for a Mercedes 320cdi and or Bluetec, albeit, also a great car, once I realized BMW had the Diesel, I had to go there - even for the premium to do so. Getting great mileage, 27.5 from NJ to MD (3hrs) highway, and low 20's on more stop and go. Anyone know where to get a Bentley Manual for the e70? I only see Amazon and Ebay having the e53 older x5 up to '06

No. I think eco credit sold a bunch, as did diesel mania. But BMW owners can be a finicky bunch, and lots have been off-loaded. No fault of the engine, but instead a result of typical impulse purchases and ill thought through decision-making.

I love my X5d. As for the nav, any of the map programs available on an IPhone or Android phone blow it away. Its the nature of technology and BMW isn't alone in having a NAV system that is antiquated. For purists, the thought of clipping a phone to one of your vent brackets is pure heresy. For me, I could care less about aesthetics, its all about function.

I clip my IPhone 5 to the vent. From there, I can run any of the maps apps and stream Spotify via Bluetooth through the stereo system. I've used the in-car nav system once since I bought the car at the end of 2011.

If I get another BMW in the future, I'll explore skipping the nav bundle entirely and looking at aftermarket solutions to the stuff in that bundle.

Talk about disinformation.... There is no "magic" here, and no "finicky" involved. Because the Eco Credit comes off the cap cost, not the residual, a ton of BMW Diesels are leased. Those leases end after 2 or 3 years. All those 2010 lease returns came back in the past year, as did the 2011 2 year leases. The 2011 3-year and 2012 2-year lease returns will start arriving at dealerships this Fall.

Part of the reason they wind up on dealer lots is that the residual is so high relative to the transaction cost. Folks like me who LOVE their Diesel can't justify buying it at lease end, much as we're tempted. But for the record, they don't sit on the lot long. There are precisely TWO CPO X5d's for sale within a 50 mile radius of Boston: one 2011 and one 2012. I think that is properly defined as a "brace" not a "bunch".

And how in the world did you dream up "Impulse purchases and ill thought through decision-making"???? I don't know ANYONE who bought an X5D on impulse. For a great many of us, the idea of a diesel motor in a German luxury car was a bit counter-intuitive, and we did tons of research before pulling the trigger. I would argue that of all BMW models, the diesels are probably the LEAST impulsive purchases.

In summary, I smell troll.

I think Rick just has a different opinion. And while I think you analysis is the bulk of the effect, there may be other driving factors..

Well, since the jeep has already been towed twice since the start of this thread due to computer failure, my mind has changed rather quickly! Every dashboard light lit up like a Christmas tree! Who the hell knows what happened!!!! Forget the 2014 x5, I'm not even waiting a week!

I completely agree with this point! I made several test drive on X5 diesel, read a lot of info, talk to my friends, asked questions to owners - and than moved forward to purchase one!
Great point!
