Should we split the Z3 and Z4 into two forums? Feedback wanted

Bimmerfest Z3 and Z4 Members,

A member of the site suggested that we split the Z3 and Z4 forum so each group has their own space. As I recall we put the two Z cars into one forum so there would be a bigger mass of owners to drive discussion and answer questions. If we've moved past that and it is now time to split up the forum then we're for it. We want to do what will make you happy.

Please vote in the poll and leave your feedback below so we know what is best.

Thanks,
Tim & the Bimmerfest Team

I hate segregation, but in this case it would make it easier to find things related to either car, and we've all at some point or another forgotten to tag our posts as Z3 or Z4 specific.

Not the label.

I wouldn't know a Z4 if one bit me on the ass. At this point, I barely know my granddaughter's Z3.

That said, I submit the question being posed should be driven by the commonality of the two cars and answered by those familiar with both cars and this forum.

In other words, when someone comes to the site with something to contribute or a problem to solve, what percentage of the time will the information be specific to a 3 vs 4?

For example, if those of you in the know estimate 25% or more of the posts apply equally to both models, I would continue with a combined forum, as that will eliminate the need for joining, searching, following, two forums. The priority being to foster shared knowledge. What about more precisely sharing information ? Less important, at least in this setting, at least in my opinion.

Anything less than that, split 'em.

My point is that the answer lies in the data being shared, not the label of the car.

I think personally I'd keep them together... although I'm still a Z3 bigot, I do like being able to see what the Z4 owners are thinking and doing.

No separation, I am actually interested to see what goes on with the Z4s in case I ever decide to buy one for myself and/or I am asked about Z4s.
I am not for ghettos, both cars are BMWs and I don't see why a Z3 person could not contribute to a Z4 thread and a Z4 person on a Z3 thread, for that we need to have exposure in a common space.

I am not sure, separate is OK I guess - but I would really appreciate a PICTURE section for Z4 and Z3, this forum is too depressing yet helpful with the posts about this breaking down or that not working.

I understand that lumping everything together to get more traffic, but makes it difficult to sort through it. The Z3M/Z4M doesn't get much love either. Why is it that even the X5M/X6M gets its own forum under the ///M models but the Z3M/Z4M doesn't?

Split Forums

I am a Z3 owner, but I enjoy reading about both cars. In the event that I ever wear out my car I might consider buying a Z4, if I can't find another Z3.

I think they should be separate. There is really no commonality other than the Z4 followed the Z3. They only common drive train is the 01-02 Z3M and Z4M. It seems it would be better to have them as two separate entities. On Miata.net they have separate areas for all three versions of the Miata (NA, NB and NC). I wouldn't split the M's out though as they share a lot of common parts.

^^^^ This...

I may actually get a Z4 coupe one day, and at that time my interest in the Z4 will merit looking at posts related to them. With the only commonality (sp?) being the drivetrain in the earlier Z4 models, it makes more sense to separate them.

I think they should be separate. It is a beating going thru this forum because I really don't care to wade through the Z3 posts. As for people who say that they should be kept together because they like to keep up with the Z4 (or the Z3), you could still do that. All you have to do is click on both forums. Even though I have an E89, I do like to go through the E85 forum because I used to own 2 of them and can offer some help. I regularly click on both those forums.

BTW - Thanks for putting up the poll, Tim.

I agree with Z4luvr. Although I do think the Z3 is very cool looking and enjoy the pics. It is easy to click on another forum.

Interesting poll.

So far, out of 275 views, 44 people have voted. I'm not exactly sure what a "view" measures. But, based on experimentation, after I've read a thread, repeated visits don't make the view count increase. So, perhaps the view count is the number of different people who have a read a thread.

From just scanning the view counts on the first page, people seemed to be much more interested in Z3 door panel problem(1,564 views), Z4 Roof problems (1,678 views) and a number of other questions than in splitting the forum. Of course, I haven't tried to control for time.

Kind of sad that right now "don't care enough to vote" is winning.

I read more than I post. Still somewhat new to the Z3. On my corvette board there was internal debate about splitting the forum up into two sections. Lots of opinions on both sides. In the end it really helped to have different forums. Much easier to post or read topics relevant to your needs. Change can be a good thing.

I'm all for separate forums. I have almost (accidently) posted on a Z4 question thinking it was on a Z3. I have no idea if what I had written would have applied to the Z4, but the point is that I don't know, and any time I post, I try to have a well educated suggestion and not just throw out ideas that might be misleading.

I would like to see the Z3s and Z4s separated. Nothing against the Z3 crowd, I promise. But as a Z4 owner, I want to be able to see the Z4 posts and respond to those that I know something about. Or ask a question and not worry about putting it in the right forum. I know nothing about Z3s, so I don't feel I have a lot to offer those folks. So yes, split the forum.

Split them, sometimes we forget to specify Z3/Z4 on the title, or a search for similar symptom will bring posts that do not apply to one or the other.

I must be in the minority...

Because I kinda like them being together. However, ObeyThe Poodle brought up a subject that might sway my vote the other way. If it would help to clarify the searches I would be all for it.

Separate them. They pretty much share the "Z" and that's it
