you will get a production number first. The build date is established when they have aligned all the supplier streams needed to build your car.. VIN is not available until they are actually constructing the car and have stamped it on all the various components.

You should get the prod number as soon as the order is accepted as valid. I had mine before I left the dealer on day of order.

Don't forget to add roof rails if you want them and don't have M-sport.

Thanks, I did add them just didn't list them. Details like this are the great thing about this forum.

It is a seven digit number (no alpha, all numbers). It is used to identify your car throughout the production process.

You can register your production number on the BMW USA website and updates about your build will be posted there. NOTE: The updates are typically delayed. There are several stories posted here about cars being delivered to customers when the website still showed them in production at the factory.

A more timely status update can be obtained by dialing +1 800 831 1117. Select option 2. Follow the instructions to enter your production number and you'll get a status update.

Once the order in the BMW system is verified as a valid order it is put in "112" status. At that time a production number is assigned. Your dealer has to have a production slot (all dealers are allocated a certain number of each model per month). Dealers can and do trade them. Ask you dealer if they have a production slot for your X3.

You have until it flips to status 150 (production started) to make changes to the order (add/delete options) - according to BMW manufacturing policies. Your dealer may have their own policies, but in any case no changes are allowed after it goes into 150 status - little late to change the upholstery color after they started building the seats

Good point. It's time for you to have a conversation about the production slot for your X3. Actually, before you signed was the time to have that conversation, but very few of us are sufficiently knowledgeable to do so - I wasn't.

Well not the same for Europe... but anyway I understood the production number (not the VIN) is 7 digits, so only numbers?

For anyone who ordered a BMW Hitch. Is this an option from the factory or dealer installed?

I ordered mine from a dealer in NJ (I'm in CA) who had great prices (Circle BMW, if you're interested - www.circlebmwparts.com) and had a local indy shop install it. Saved about $600 over what my local dealer quoted. Same parts, same installation. Took about 5 hours.

With BMW in the U.S., a hitch is always a dealer-installed (or an indy-installed) accessory -- not a factory option. You therefore have choices. You can install the BMW USA hitch or the higher-capacity BMW "Euro" hitch. Our invisihitch is the BMW hitch overseas, where you can order the hitch as a factory option. It is a full Class 3 hitch (5,500 lbs) and completely undetectable when not in use. The USA dealer hitch is a Class 2 hitch (3,500 lbs). Both come with the BMW programmable wiring harness.

The electric "deployable ballmount" shown above is one Euro hitch option, and it's a pretty cool option. The other Euro hitch option has a removable ballmount that inserts vertically. It is the second of these two Euro factory hitch options that we brought over to the U.S. market as the invisihitch.

Unfortunately, the electrically deployable hitch, while cool, is not that practical in the U.S. because the U.S. towing market is not standardized on a single size ball. The ball needs to be consumer replaceable to accommodate different sizes when needed. Also, in the U.S. we tend to attach racks that are designed to insert into a square-tube receiver. So the Euro hitch with the vertically removable ballmount (and separate, vertically removable bike-rack connector) turns out to be the better match with U.S. towing & rack conventions. Maybe not as cool, but still completely undetectable when not in use and a really good fit with how we use hitches in the U.S.

Just that those 19" tires are gonna be very expensive to replace That's a nice build.

Actually - on second glance - why didn't you go for the Tech package? You've got most of the options selected already... was it cheaper to buy them a la carte like that?

I think I save $1000 and lose the HUD.

2 1/2 weeks since ordered and still not in production.
