Automatic car wash in 2013 X5: Neutral; engine ON or OFF?

Manual (page 305) says to place in Neutral, turn engine off, key in ignition (slot).

When you get to the end of the automatic car wash, you need to put foot on brake to restart engine and place into Drive.

Today, this almost caused me to get rear-ended in the car wash.

Can you leave the X5 in Neutral and leave the engine ON while going through an automatic car wash?

Thank you in advance for helpful information.

PS: I don't want a debate between hand wash and automatic wash in this thread.

PSS: I searched this forum and sub-forum - no answer to the question I am asking. Please no sage advice to "do a search".

On my 2008, yes. I do it all the time. I assume the 2013 is the same.

I read that same thing in the manual and didn't understand why they suggested cutting the ignition. (I guess it's to prevent any system from automatically putting it back into Park, such as when you open the door while rolling)

Neutral with engine on is how I have always entered the auto car wash. No problems.

Thanks guys. I'll do that going forward.

Turning the engine off felt wrong/dumb/dangerous.

On. I am pretty sure the car will go into Park automatically if you turn off the motor, and steering will lock if you turn ignition off completely ( second push of the button).

If it's in drive it will go into park when the engine is shut off.
If it's in neutral it does stay in neutral. Presumably so that you can tow it, or at least winch it onto a flatbed.

I hate the automatic drive-thru car washes, not debating quality, just the arses behind me. Three out of three for having the driver behind me honk when the brake lights come on shifting into drive at the end..!!!

If the engine is running and the car is in Neutral, you should be able to shift into Drive without stepping on the brake. I tried this specifically after my near disaster in the car wash that started this thread.

From neutral, my car requires stepping on the brake before shifting into drive. I tried this many times. I get an icon on the dashboard telling me to step on the brake.

Yes I started using the carwash.

One thing to note is - Key has to be in ignition and in neutral - you can stop the engine and it won't go into parking mode. I have tried it and worked out pretty well...If you remove the key out and the car goes to Parking mode after 30 mins (safety precaution and clearly mentioned in the User guide)
