Why isn't the Z4 more popular?

Why don't I see more Z4s on the road?

It is more rare in the cold winter region. Besides it is not cheap, a winter car is needed on the snow. I have not seen other Z4 E89 except at dealer lots in Massachusetts.

I do not even see a "lot" of them here in Southern California, but probably see more than in cold weather states. I had a couple of co workers that had them, and both sold them after 2-3 years and purchased other vehicles (1 purchased a used "garage queen" ferrari right in the middle of the economic crash a couple of years ago, from someone who really needed the $$$... the other traded his in because he and his wife had their first child, for a F30 335 M sport).

Consensus seems to be its a lot of money for the car, rather than a lot of car for the money.

When BMW heavily subvented leases in 2011, Z4's flew out the dealership doors. Since then, many would-be buyers made other choices. Magazines ding it for its weight and its price.

Several dealers have told me that its priced a good $10,000 too high (new) to find much of a market here... so many BMW dealers don't stock any, but will be glad to order you one.

There are 4 in my building, 3 e89s (including mine) and 1 Z4M. Not so rare down here in S. Fl. May have to do with styling, I know I was never a fan of the e85 look but like the redesigned e89.

It's OK! I used to have a Honda Civic hatch, and all I ever heard was, "What a cute car!" "That looks like a chick car!" etc, etc.

Why isn't the Z4 more popular?

Because for the money you pay, you could get a car that actually performs the way it looks like it should.

Still waiting for my order / Chick car for my chick!! Its a weekend car for fun, and most people only have one car. You must have multiple cars for a Z4 to be considered. She will use it as her daily driver,as long as the trunk can fit new shoes and other mall items she is happy. Its a 2-seater with a small trunk / luxury item, not a necessity!! Any other reason like price, weight, handeling, all come from jealous people that can't afford one. Just like the Porsche 911- all the negative comments come from people that can only dream.

Nothing is perfect- Just my 2-cents.- Give me a break-the Z4 is a nice car, of course its overpriced, just like everything you buy on this planet!!! A 4.8sec 0-60 car cant be to over weight. Yes-may not handle like a F1-car but remember what it is!! All cars are going electric steering so get used to it or buy a old car. That's our government at work!!! Tight MPG has led to that. OP- Main reason- its a 2-seater chick car!! Not many chicks can afford one,but if you ask I bet they all would want one.

I am also curious why so few are ordered with manual transmissions. This manual gearbox is super smooth and really brings out the best in the engine.

No, unfortunately CRV's and Forresters are the new "chick car".

To the OP; Z4's are low production, expensive two-seaters (cruisers now, they used to be sports cars) - they were never intended to be "popular".

So, enjoy the exclusivity!

+1, the non-turbo I6 coupled with a 6MT makes quite a nice roadster. The wife and I make weekend trips in ours and feel it is a great touring coupe/convertible. Yes, it's a lot of money but for us it is a perfect weekend car.

The twin turbo I6 coupled with a 6MT makes an even nicer roadster!

Faster for sure, but having owned a few high HP cars over the years, I feel that the monster motors take away from the driving experience. Don't get me wrong, I don't want to drive something under powered, but too much power simply takes away the need to for the driver to "get it right". Same for the dual clutch transmissions, and many of the other drivers aids.

I would like to see BMW make a lighter, simpler version of the Z4. Not like what Porsche does when they remove all the goodies and charge $10K more, but simply remove the luxury/fluff stuff, keep the mechanicals the same, and charge less. Make it a drivers car, like a modern version of the Jag e-Type! However, hypocritically, I am not sure I am ready to give up the PRHT just yet.

BMW has done this with the 135i and the 1 Series M. If it is all about dropping weight, yet retaining the big engine, those are for you. They don't really have a back seat. That's really just storage. The convertible hardtop is a very heavy proposition by itslef without heated & powered seats, all those speakers and other stuff.
