I love the exclusive nature of the E89. The Northeast is a tough market for the Z.
2 seat, rear wheel drive, convertible in a NE winter doesn't exactly send hoards of people into the BMW show room.
The 3 series x drive does this as there are 10's of 1000's of them on the road.
The new accord is the BMW 3 series.

Why isn't the Z4 more popular?

I saw one today. Not an E89, but still a Z4

Vehicle price for what you get... And outrageous insurance I'd imagine.

I'm 18 and the insurance isn't bad at all. You should have seen what we were getting quoted for a Cayman/cayman S

Actually the insurance on a Z4 is very reasonable. It is a lot more to insure a 3 series because a high percentage of 3 series drivers ... er...ah...are "less mature" than Z4 drivers.

The Z4 is the 9th worst selling car of 2012 in the US. LOL

It is an $1100 set of Michelin Pilot Super Sport Tires from being the sports car it was meant to be. Put them on and get rid of the runflats that BMW attorney's force on you.
The Z4 is widely considerdd the best looking car BMW has on the market.

I still get looks and great comments on my car ALL THE TIME. 3 Series are boring to look at and a dime a dozen.

No manufacturing is stocking and selling a ton of it's competitors such as the TT and Boxster. These are all niche cars.

Awesone, that means it's the 9th most rare car. Thanks for the information.
Here's some news for you: BMW never intended to sell more than about 5,000 Z4s a year anyway.

I had a Mercedes c class. Without exaggeration I would see at least 10 a day. I see one E89 every couple of days. I love It! I am surprised they're not that popular here in South Florida though. But thats fine with me

Then I'll rephrase and take out the sarcasm:

If it puts the competition to sleep, I don't have to try hard to take their lane away. Around here, the 'go to' muscle car seems to be the Dodge Charger R/T, or the Challenger SRT8, with an occasional Mustang GT here or there. Most of the people in my town are not sophisticated enough to distinguish the difference between a 328 and a 335, so they under-estimate my ability to pass, to my advantage. If you prefer to call it a "wolf in sheep's clothing", I'll take that.
I love the way the car looks! I also love the looks of the Z4, but for me it's impractical, so I chose the coupe. If my attempt at a little humor got you butt-hurt, or looked like I was slamming your choice of car, perhaps you are in the wrong vehicle. You may want to pick up a new F30 so you can join the Forum where all of the sensitive, butt-hurt people like to go!

I can't think of 1 good reason why anyone here on the Z4 Forum really cares if you go around fooling Dodge Charger drivers with your 335i. That just sounds silly.

The only reason I replied to your troll-like remark about the Z4 to begin with was because your ignorance astounded me. Case in point - 95% of the Z4 owners on this forum that think the 335 is a ho- hum looking car, are intelligent enough not to go over to the the 3 Series Forum and announce it like a big mouth. We'd get laughed out of the building, kind of like I'm doing to you right now.

Would love a Z4 someday. In fact, our next car is between that or a Porsche Cayman. May be a while before we're in a position to do so, however.

FWIW the wife is leaning towards the Porsche, and I'm leaning toward the Z4 as more practical everyday and long-trip car.

As to "amount of car for the money" ... I somehow don't think that's the major selling point in this particular market segment.

I was actually in the market for a Cayman when I switched to the Z4. The two cars really aren't very similar, other than both being German and similarly priced. I am sure there are many people who would argue for hours about which car is better or faster, but for my needs, the Z4 was simply more enjoyable (touring car vs. track car). If I lived in an area where the roads were smoother, and had more curves, i might feel differently.

Makes sense - plus, with a Z4, the engine is where it belongs, in front!

Seriously though, Caymans are nice, I've driven them, but having that engine so close behind you does get tiresome.

I liked my 2005 Z4, but it had a punishing ride, which I'd imagine has been rectified by now (it was in an 06 si I drove).

I've always wondered what it's like having the engine sit right behind you. Does that drone (beautiful though it may be) get tiresome?

Still, when the wife is pushing to buy a Porsche (and you have a wife that absolutely insists on a manual transmission... ) well, who am I to question?

Still, from what I've read the Z4 makes a better daily driver. And I am the more practical of us as a couple... (don't tell her I said so)

Yes, that's not usually the way it works! I use my Z4 as my daily driver on a one way 45 minute commute. I would be beaten to death if I had a manual transmission even though it would certainly be more fun on the weekends.

While I sometimes like hearing the growl of of Z4, I would definitely get tired of the Porsche's engine noise droning out my music.

I do like having a relatively rare car. Getting a low mileage CPO Z4 is actually a quite reasonable bang for the buck. Before I got my first Z4, I looked at Porsche and the Corvette and decided they weren't for me.

Rob, I've spent time behind the wheel of both the Boxster and Cayman - top down, the Boxster has an awesome engine note - it's hard to beat and it feels right. Classic Porsche experience. Top up, it's droning and tiresome (IMO).

The Cayman always has the top up, so it's a mixed bag - personally, I think the Boxster is the more "sensible" of the pair - it's more fun, has more luggage capacity and is "less expensive" (a relative term). Note, there's an all new B/C pair and I've not driven either.

The Z4 will trounce both in terms of daily driving and all around practicality except in one area - luggage capacity. The new Z4 is even worse in that luggage space diminishes even more when the top's down. I HATE folding tin tops and for me it'd be a deal killer - they're heavy, complex, and take a lot of stowage space. Visions you might have of you and Pam sailing along the countryside, top down as Gil Scott Heron blasts from the stereo, on your way to a wine country retreat will have to be done top up.

I'd look at the all new Boxster if I were in this class of car - your wife has the right idea It handles better, has a proper ragtop and it holds more stuff. It's expensive, but you keep your cars a long time, so you'll get max fun out of it for years.
