Big snake wrapped around my steering rack

Ok so now that I have your attention, I jumped into the car Monday morning and it felt as if the tires were flat or there was something wrapped around my steering rack binding it up. I thought it was weird that it didn't come on gradually. Naturally I checked tire pressures and power steering fluid level...both fine. I'm assuming that the power steering pump is shot but I figured I'd reach out and see if anyone else has had a similar experience before I make a mistake and replace the pump unnecessarily. Others usually talk about clicking sounds when the steering pump fails so this has me wondering...
After spending 10 hours replacing the water pump I'm beginning to fancy a lame ass Honda or Toyota at this point. Is replacing the steering pump going to make me want to jump ship too?

Thanks in advance for your input, help, death threats, etc.

Oh yeah...2007 335ix sedan

On my x5, I have had a few idrive warnings saying something like critical power steering failure, drive very cautiously....and the vehicle drove much like you are explaining. Once I shut off the car and checked the fluid, it was low, but once the car was restarted, it drove fine until I could get home and refill. It was almost like the vehicle went into some sort of protection mode. It was a very odd situation. Maybe your situation is in relation to the fluid level in some way.

No, there are "some" legitimate questions and entertainment on this board I still find intriguing.

To OP: Well, could be that a precautionary PS fluid replacement might dislodge whatever is binding up the pump, if it is fluid related?

Either that or contact Jeff Corwin.

I have never owned the x3...only driven it a few times. My advice would be useless, due to fact I do not know her motivation for making the change.

What I usually do is start with poking the snake with a long stick. 9/10 that works. If you are still having problems pm me I know another way to fix but its frowned upon by the US government.
