2003 540i Sport Stumbles after 50% throttle

hey guys, just picked up an 03 540 sport (awesome!) and it stumbles when you start to get on it. Somewhere around 50% throttle it suddenly falls on its face. otherwise it runs perfectly. Cruising at highway speeds and light acceleration have no problems. It has the Dinan CAI. I'm not exactly sure what else is involved with that package.

If anyone has had any experience with this type of thing I would appreciate any input. My first check is going to be fuel pressure, although it doesnt seem to me like a fuel pressure problem, too abrupt. The check engine light is not on btw, although i will check the codes today.

Thanks!

Tony

I checked the codes, none present. There are two codes pending for the secondary air system but I think that it's because I disconnected the air pump. It sounds horrible.

Might be one or more of the coils.

I just drove it again. Seems fine. When I drove it home last night it was raining and the front bumper was removed. I wonder if the air filter just got wet? It has the conical type down behind the fog light. I'll try it again tomorrow.

Sucking a little water is not a huge deal...but as Uncle Ken will tell ya, if it sucks it up like a ballast tank on a U-Boat, you are in for some serious repair bills! In general, most of those air filters create more issues than any actual gain in performance... mostly you just get more audible intake noise.

By what method did you disconnect the air pump? If anything is left open to the atmosphere, it could cause a drivability issue...but I wouldn't know for certain, beyond my abilities... ;(

540 M-Sport is likely correct, first thing to try would be replacing the air pump. DH: just did all my coils after experiencing stumbling on acceleration. I am at 100K just now. In a week & a bit, son and I driving over to Spartanburg to pick up a 135is for him and attend the Performance Center. Looking very much forward to that. Home via the Cherohala Skyway and sundry other Smoky Mountain roads. Woot!

Re: 2003 540i Sport Stumbles after 50% throttle

I disconnected power to the air pump. It was making a pretty loud whining noise and I couldn't hear the engine at startup. There is now a check engine light, po492 but Im guessing it's bc of that.

Is anyone using the little yellow box (b800 I think) to read airbag codes? It is telling me table 3, code 6. There is no table 3. Maybe I need to start a new thread for this?
