Cheaper dashboard on 2010 and up?

Look at pictures on the 2011 328i I was looking at, the dashboard looks cheaper like its made of cheaper plastic, is this true?

Also, is the "leather" on the door panels and door handles actually leather? Or cheap vinyl.

Not one iota of difference in the materials used on the dashboard for the entire E9x run, excepting the addition of some shiny trim bits along the way.

Yes, on a car with leather upholstery the door trim panels and armrests are also leather. A dead giveaway for leather is the seam down the middle of the door trim panel. Leatherette/vinyl has no seam.

You really want to talk about cheap plastic & vinyl you should be posting to the bottom end, post bailout, Government Motors brand message board.

Haha true story!
The reason I asked is because I'm debating on a 2009 vs a 2011. I want the newer one but not if they made the interior cheap like a Honda civic.

Why? Because of the stereo? Wasn't that fixed in 2011? The one I'm looking at has the HK system in it anyway.

I would vote for the 2011 model. That was the last year for the E90. Virtually all of the bugs had been worked out.

The stereo upgrade was a running change during the 2011 model year. It was upgraded around October of 2010. So all of the 2010 models and some of the 2011 models came with the poorer quality base sound system. Of course, the Harman Kardon sound system will negate that risk.

My car is an early 2011, but I ordered it with the HK sound system. That is a very good system, and definitely worth the $800 upcharge I paid.

I would get the newest one I could. I would also expect a greater percentage of 335's will have the premium package with leather interiors in them.

If you have the sport package do you also have a leather inteeior? And I'm looking at the 328i vs a 335i because of the problems with the HPFP and turbo waste gates on the 335i.

There are too many variations over the years to make a positive statement but generally sport seats are leather

No. The standard upholstery is leatherette. There are lots and lots of sport package equipped cars out there with leatherette seats. Leather was available as a stand alone option or as part of the premium package. If the door trim panels have a stitched seam in them the car has leather. No stitched seam means leatherette.

IIRC, the only thing BMW cheapened were the sun visors. Pre'10 models seem to have the soft felt and they went to some cheap plastic. Even the M3s in 08/09 have the nice felt visors. Everything else seems to be the same.

I agree that the fabric ones appear nicer since they match the headliner, but once they get cooked and the fabric separates its not as pretty. I wonder if that's why they switched to the vinyl.

Possibly; I've never heard of any problems. I think ECS sells the original fabric type, they are the ones that belong in a car of this price range IMO.

So is it possible to swap the visors out for the fabric ones?
Did they cheapen any of the mechanicals ect?

I kind of want the iDrive system but I don't want it to fail on me down the road. Any body know how problematic the idrive system is?

This site had a few cloth ones; they are well worth it.

As far as I know, iDrive has been pretty reliable, it may not be the fastest or prettiest implementation, but I don't see many complaints about failures when searching here.

Agreed. Unfortunately I want some of the extras that come bundled with the premium package so I end up with leather anyways.

Damn, I didn't know that, I would have rather had the leatherette in the sports seats when I had the 335i, it's just more durable.

I am an audiophile. A poor quality car stereo is probably a deal-killer for me.

I think there are a lot of car enthusiasts that are also audio enthusiasts. But this is only based on personal experience, and I do not have any data to back-up my opinion.

I'm a Bimmerphile I could actually do without a stereo but to each their own.
