Hi guys,

I have an 1991 525i M50B25 BMW, and recently I came across the OBD tools and scanners.

I have the old 20-pin socket, and I was wondering, if I will buy and OBD2 adapter and an OBD2 scanner, will I get any information? Will it be accurate? Or should I just find a plain OBD scanner instead of OBD2?

Cheers!

If you are just trying to obtain the codes do a stomp test.

If you want to use the diag. port then you will need something specifically for our cars.

Stomp test omly works on USDM cars, does not exist in euro cars, the OP is from Australia.

That diagnositic plug is commonly called the pacman plug because it has a pacman shape in the middle. You can buy BMW specific readers.

No E34 was produced with OBD2 as E34 ended in 1995, and it was 1996 that the international treaty or whatever it was took force. It ensured all cars had OBD2 electronics and more importantly the OBD2 diagnostic plug, instead of each manufacturer having thier own system which they did progressively in the 80s and early 90s
