sunroof exploded (shatter)

2012 x1 40,000km. Sunroof ready to explode (shatter) sitting in my driveway. Has this happened to anyone? Looking online and see many BMW/other manufactures dealerships blaming this on a rock hitting the sunroof which is not very likely. see http://abclocal.go.com/kgo/story?sec...ide&id=8026317.

My sunroof is bulging upwards towards the sky. If a rock hit it I presume it would not be bulging outwards. Anyone have any insight on this?

THanks for your help._a_

It happens, and considered a manufacturing defect. Usually due to heat and if there is a small blemish or chip in the glass when installed, this can happen. Doing a search will result in lots of posts on everything from the 3 series to X5 having this happen.

I'm trying to remember if BMW will fix this even after the 4 year standard warranty...

Edit: The repair will take a few weeks as dealerships don't keep the glass in stock. Fight for a loaner and be prepared to wait a while. Do a google search for "site:bimmerfest.com shattered sunroof" and read up on what others went through during the repair process.

Audi had a problem with Q5 pano roofs shattering in the cold a while back. The problem was eventually traced back to a bad batch of glass from their supplier. Ugly stuff!

My sunroof exploded upwards when driving under the bridge.

Dealer was very curious about it, but it was clear that sunroof was bent upwards and they replaced it without any issues.

This just happened to my 2013 X1...Just getting on the freeway when it EXPLODED!!!...drove it right to BMW of El Cajon...you can tell it exploded outward from the glass facing upward...luckily the inside sunroof cover was closed...
Does anyone know if this is covered?...our Service Manger told us he was going to do all he could to get this covered but there is a chance that we would have to pay.

it's up to your dealer to make a case. it was covered 100% for me. make sure they note how it exploded upwards.

My 2013 535 Sunroof exploded

My wife and I were driving on a city street--no bridges above, no trees overhead, when the sunroof exploded upward. Fortunately, the ceiling panel was in place so we were not hurt, but the flying glass dented and scratched the paint on the car extensively. So far, BMW will not take responsibility and I was forced to get my insurance to pay for it. This incident leaves me with little confidence both in the car (my 3rd 5-series) and in BMW's failure to take honor it's warranty or to expressing caring for long-time customers. Interestingly, the body shop said that it is their second 535 with this problem in the past 3 months.

I am sorry to hear that, and glad you got it worked out. I always read these "shattered moonroof threads", and there are a pretty lot of them(just paranoia) and one interesting thing I've noticed is that in just about every instance the person says "the sunshade was closed", I've never read one where it shattered with it opened and everybody got a glass shower. It's all very odd.

This happened to me today. Sunshade was closed. Large hole in the center. Ridges going outward as if the force was initiated in the cabin (pressure?).
Dealer says that it was probably a rock that hit it. They pointed out two small (about 0.020" diameter) marks (rocks?) near the perimeter and said I should contact my insurance because it will be over $7k to fix.

This was happening to a lot of the people in the 3 series forum a few years back. I don't think anyone had a definitive answer as to what was causing the issue.

I'm sorry, but I highly doubt a rock caused this - for various reasons. While possible a rock could strike the top portion of the exterior glass, I highly doubt this is likely the reason for the "outward" explosion. Instead, I suspect the tensile strength of the glass (bad batch or not), cannot withstand the negative pressure difference(s) on the exterior glass surface. Essentially, given the slipstream above the front windshield and immediately over the roof (including the glass), pressure differences (coupled with fluctuating temperature cycles) is to blame for this.

Given time, I'll hook up pressure sensors immediately underneath (inside the cabin) and above the glass (exterior) at various speeds to see if the pressure difference creates enough force required to potentially cause the glass to explode.

Assuming any cares enough . . Lol.

They replaced the 3 series, not X1's. It happened too much on the 3 series, not as much on the X1's.
In my case. They said if there is evidence of a rock chip (arguable in my case), then they call it environmental damage. So insurance has to pay for it. I called BMW NA, they sided with the dealer, stating that the technical writers are their technical experts in the field.

aldosterone, a professor of engineering at UC Berkeley (Tarek Zohd) also agrees with you. He says the rock would have to reach a height of 15-25 feet, and be travelling at 70-80 mph to shatter the glass. That's 70-80 mph straight down. The chances of that happening are next to impossible.

Rock would have to be dropped on the glass to crack it. The photos of the glass do not even look like cracks from rock damage. The glass has been snapped by being pushed or lifted up, leaving a ridge. I think the professor is right, and this issue is a defect rather than damage. The glass was likely sucked upward by airflow.

There is one other possibility, but it would happen when the car is not moving. Some of the panoramic Subaru Forester moonroofs have cracked after being parked in hot summer sun, but they all had been aftermarket tinted which caused them to absorb heat. The failed BMW moonroofs were neither aftermarket tinted nor parked.

This is why I don't like cars with sun/moon roofs. It's either convertible or no sunroof for me!

Was it a 320d? The 320d is noted to contain a defect in its panoramic sunroof glass. Two words: "ceramic frit."

Irritated

My sunroof shattered this past weekend. He was driving behind a truck so we assumed it was something that hit...but after reading these posts I see that probably was not the case. Insurance was giving me a hard time about BMW fixing it. Went round and round and they finally signed off on the repair
