4 Series (F32) vs. 3 Series (F30) Photo Comparisons

Below you will find some comparison shots highlighting the differences and similarities between the F32 and the F30. While the two cars look similar at a glance, when you look closer, there are many details that give the F32 it's own look and personality.

Front Angle

Wider, larger, more aggressive air intakes in the front apron. The Air Curtains are visible at the far edges of the intakes. Wider lower look to the front as a whole. Also, note the flare in the rear wheel arch.

Front/Side Angle

Kidney grilles have a bit of a forward slant to them. Smooth flowing roofline and frameless glass give a clean look up top. The line below the windows is very pronounced as it moves from the front fender to the flared rear fender. Behind the front wheels you see the Air Breathers, which combined with the Air Curtains up front, help reduce drag around the wheel arches. The hood lines and headlamps still have a similar look to them.

Side Angle

Here you can really see the sloping roof line, forward slant to the grilles, Air Breathers and the more aggressive upper body line. The rear wing looks less pronounced on the F32. The lower door line looks pretty much the same on both cars.

Rear Angle
Rear

At the rear you can see the how the sloping roof line, stretched rear tail lights and flared rear fenders give the rear of the car a low, wide, aggressive look compared to the F30.

Thanks for the post. It makes me feel a little better that I'm not just getting a rebadged F30.

I think that the F30 looks better than the F32, specially profile.

Actually, I prefer the E90 versus the E92. IMO, the E90 looks more masculine, at least on our E90 M3.

F32 looks way better and has a much sportier look. The only problem is that side vent which will not be a design feature on the M4.

Thanks for the photos and analysis! Though I just got an F30 320i, I really like the look of the F32. Too bad I need four doors! Maybe I can have some of those air breathers!

So glad I got a 13 F30. 14 F32 is expensive and not more attractive with that.

If you use history as a basis, we are still potentially looking at the Spring of 2015 as a launch point for those cars. The best case scenario would be the time table being moved up because of their sales battle with MB/Audi/Lexus but then you are still talking the fall of 2014.

I would expect that we will at least get some more information this fall including maybe a concept car being shown off at some point.

Thanks. Based on history, do you think the M3 and M4 will come out at the same time?

I did some more digging and found that the M3 Coupe and M3 Sedan went on sale at the same time in the United States so that could very well happen again this time around.

I think BMW wasted a great opportunity to take more risk with 4 series due to the fact that it is a coupe with separate designation and cost extra $$$. They made the 6 series look so much more edgy and different then the 5 series. They did not do that here.

The concept 4 series was on the right track until somebody at BMW came up with a wise idea "Lets make it a bit more dull and boring". So everything edgy, new, and sporty was left of the shelf. Who ever signed off on taking all that was good with concept 4 series and going with this current version should be fired.

Apparently Bangle was the only one at BMW who had any balls to present or sign off on an exterior car design that was a little risky. Since he left almost everything but the Z4 and the 6-Series have become Audi-level conservative.

At least with the 4-Series the grilles have grown a little wider so that awkward plasticky void that is the headlight assembly touching the grilles isn't so pronounced. Even better though was the 4-Series concept that filled the space in with the unraveling corona rings.

I too am disappointed (but not surprised) that the 4-Series took a step back from the concept in edginess. Still, I'm interested to see how it drives compared to the F30 since BMW has been talking up the car as if they did make it somewhat unique from the 3-Series in this regard.

I am with you on that one at least Bangle had the guts to make cars edgy and ahead of the curve. His cars still look good today. The new BMW's are getting very boring in design with the exception of the Z4 or 6 series.

As for the 435i I am so far not that impressed. No upgrade to the N55 engine in regards to power. The design is not all that. For the improvements a bit lower CG and a wider track is all that we got. However, it is still burdened with that horrible EPS setup. I am not holding my breath for it to be exciting to drive after being disappointed already once by the blah final product going from concept 4 series to production version.

Though secretly I hope you are right and I am wrong.
