HUD reflection on the windshield

Cleaning your HUD screen should resolve this. Dust significantly amplifies that black box reflection and softens/dulls the display info. Use a delicate screen cleaner and cloth.

Mine seems to just float over the hood. It doesn't appear to be on the windshield at all. Perhaps the cleaning will help you.

Isee the reflection of the HUD unit as well as the center speaker. This goes away with polarized sunglasses, but alas, can not see the HUD info.

I think it's very annoying also, I keep it very clean and it seems worst when I clean the windshield.

Yes. I guess I do see some reflection but not that annoying (even center speaker). I know if the black box from the HUD is almost glowing...it's dust build up. I wonder if tints make it worse. I have 35% all around except windshield.

My 550i is the third vehicle I've owned with HUD and all three have had reflections. It seems any time you break up the smooth non-glare surface of the dash with HUD, speakers etc it is going cause reflections. It doesn't really bother me even through we get a fair amount of sunny days here. Most of the time I seem to subconsciously tune it out so I don't notice it. But it can be annoying at times. Short of putting something on the dash like a Dash-Mat I don't think there is much you can do about it.

I posted this on the F30 forum as well. Seems to be an issue with newer HUD systems. My 2005 645 had hud but no glare issues.

---------

I just had an F30 (328i) loaner for a few days. Three things I notice right away.

1. The HUD glare. Maybe some cardboard (non reflective covering) on top of the shroud will help. I look for the off switch but could not find it. Maybe in iDrive somewhere. The glare drove me nuts.
2. The hood of the car was vibrating up and down while driving like there is inadequate structural support.
3. The engine and exhaust note was more Toyota sounding.

I suspect all three will be fixed with the ucoming LCI in a few years.

I am surprised by both the HUD and hood issue.

Yes it is a known issue, especially in sunlight. As others have posted polarized sunglasses help but then you don't see the HUD itself.

I seem to tune it out by now.

No reflection here at all. Just a crisp text that appears ahead of me (never really thought about whether it seems "painted on the window" or "outside of the car" but I definitely don't see two of them (i.e reflection).

I don't seem to mind the reflection from the HUD during the day. I have it tuned just past the middle for brightness, maybe a bit higher to compensate for polarized sunglasses. The worst is at night. you have to turn it down as you see the entire hud panel even at the middle mark.

I wonder what the differences are between HUD's perhaps. I keep mine clean so there's no dust buildup on it.

Mine is so subtle I usually naturally tune it out, and then when I do notice it it's more like "Oh awesome, I have HUD, how do I not always notice it with such sharp/crisp text? What a neat feature".

HUD reflection on the windshield

The issue is not dust.

The issue is not about the clarity.

The issue is the annoying glare from the plastics surrounding the optics. The surface of these plastic create a glare on the windshield.

If you have not noticed the issue you have bigger problems.

Thats what it is, BMW should have used the same material as the rest of the dash is made of. All the plastic parts of the dash glares off the windshield.

I have looked at it closer today and found that at certain sunlight the entire dashboard reflects in the windshield. Because the HUD plastic frame and the B&O center speaker use differentmaterials, they stand out, and at times it creates the impression that they are the only reflections.

While it is clearly visible, I have found that after a while you just get used to it and you tune it out.

Fully agree, although it takes away some of the HUD magic when you see the reflection of a plastic frame around the seemingly floating HUD graphics. To all physicists and engineers on this board, wouldn't it be possible to build a windshield that does not reflect?

I have to say that when I had my MB with a Nappa covered leather dash the reflection was not noticeable because the leather had a flat finish... It didn't catch the light. So it everything was wrapped in leather I'd be much happier

Do fighter jets suffer from HUD glare? Maybe the Israelis can solve the BMW problem.

I finally figured out what you guys are talking about. The TEXT of the HUD I thought you were talking about (which doesn't reflect on anything one bit on my car and just "floats over the hood"). However it's the BIN that reflects. I now notice it as I started looking for it thanks to this damn thread. The dash as a whole naturally reflects a bit but the material surface kind of disappears into the windshield. The HUD bin itself is a different texture and you can much more easily make out that square shape in the windshield during sunlight.

Why is the HUD projection box so large? Reminiscent of 70s or 80s technology.......

The HUD we get is the same tech developed by Siemens a very long time ago. 1970's ish. The box was in Pontiacs in the mid 90's.

It is very archaic by today's standards.

That may be so, but there is nothing archaic about the prices BMW charges for it ... they are very much aligned with new century and new millennium

I "test drove it" (HUD) in both F10 and F30 and it didn't make my knees wobbly or anything like that - meaning, I wasn't impressed by that technology. I did notice the box around it in both cases. Plus, the only information I would need to see on the windshield would be rpm. That's not available (as far as I know) and I would really need it only on the racetrack. So ...
