I have a 1990 bmw 525i 5 speed manual.I have a snap on versus diagnostic computer which I updated for imports, but it only goes back to 1992,and will not read my car. Will an ecu from a 1994 530i make this thing work?I have one I could try?I read they are compatible from 1989 to 1995.

No. The ECU's are not compatable. I'm not sure what kind of data you are after, but you may be able to use this procedure to pull any error codes that are stored in your current ECU.

I say "may be" only because the Bentley manual indicates that it only works for 92 and up, but many others here with cars older than 92 have been able to do it.

Hope this helps.

I know the stomp test, but I'm having multiple electrical issues, cruise control, backround illumination on cluster, but all signal lights ect work.no button lights on trip computer, windows, low beams and sunroof work sporatically.a/c the same works sometimes.I'm thinking a bad ground or a bare wire somewhere. l

All of those small things can be fixed with a DVOM, bulbs, and some cleaning tools.

Pulling codes on our cars will not give information about things other than the engine. Is that what you are trying to find out?

What's wrong with the stomp test? If it is not working you may need to adjust the TPS.

That snap on scanner isn't going to help you.

you need to chase wiring issues like that the manual way, with a book and a DVOM.

sorry, but domestic scanners don't work well for BMW's.
