Does a PPI request hurt bargaining power

I've been looking for a 2006 325i or a 2011 328i. I got a PPI on the former, and made an offer (somewhat lowball, but not ridiculous) on the latter. After the PPI on the 325i, I backed away. The counter I got on the 328i wasn't good enough. So, I walked.

In thinking about it, though, if you request to take the vehicle for a PPI, the dealer pretty much knows your serious about the car. And really then, the only bargaining chip I would have is if it came back with a bad PPI ... but then I'm not sure if I would want the car.

So, is it best to first settle on a price ... then spring the PPI request on the dealer? At that point, I could say: I agree on the price ... but it's contingent on what I find with the PPI.

Thoughts? ... I'm getting fatigued trying to find the BMW I really want.

I would say don't "spring" the PPI request on the dealer. Let him know up front if we get to an agreed upon price the deal will be subject to an acceptable ppi.

Then and Than are different words and they are not interchangeable.
