Getting worst mpg on 2013 535i M Sport

Hi everyone, i am new to BMW family. Just bought my first 535 M Sport AW about 5 weeks ago. And since than i only drove 600 miles til today cuz i had to wait to get clear bra installed before i start driving regularly. Anyway, my question is, first day when i drove it from dealership they filled the gas tank and after that i already filled twice and its half again. So looks like i am not even getting close what they claim on sticker(20 city/30 mpg). By the way so far we drove 70% in city. Not really happy with it cuz even my Escalade give better mpg. Wanted to check with you guys if someone else has same issue. Thanx a lot in advance

70% in city driving will always yield a horrible gas mileage in any gas car. What mileage are you getting?

I get about 18mpg when iI drive 70% city. When my city drive gets around 100% my mileage drops to about 16.5. Recently finished a 2000 mile road trip through mountains and got 30mpg at every fill up. You really need to calculate your mileage and not take the dash displays word for it. It can be calibrated to be quite accurate (mine is around .1 or .2 mpg's off either high or low), but they are pretty far off uncalibrated.

Your Escalade gets better gas mileage than that, I find that hard to believe. Your car is not broken in yet, gas mileage should improve by maybe 1 MPG or so after 5000 - 8000 miles. I driving about the same city/hwy ratio as you and I get about the same 18 MPG with AC on, but I am during in Boston traffic.

How do you calibrate your dash display?

Trade it in for a diesel or hybrid.

I'm getting similar to others on the board - 26-32 highway, and 23-24 blended over 70/30 highway/city.

My last 535i (2011 F10) was a touch worse (25-30 highway; 22-23 blended).
NOTE that replacing runflats (Goodyear Excellence RoF) with Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus took a full 2MPG (8-10%) off of my highway and blended number.

Your number is a total average from the last reset. City mpg will suck, I'm around 16 if that's all I do. Tons better on long interstate rides, nearly 30. Its sitting at 21 now after 1500 miles from last reset. Do a reset at next fill up when you are not stopping and going and see how it averages. And yes, it's not loosened up inside yet, it tends to improve as the miles pile up. I have 8k at this point on a V8.

Don't worry, drive happy, Mon!

Maybe somethings up with the air/fuel mixture or something? On my car it's hard to get truly bad mileage even in congested city driving. Try using the ECO PRO mode when in traffic as it helps alleviate some things that unnecessarily consume gas (too snappy a throttle, extra pressure by components usage, etc.). On the highway the car can get 30 MPG easily, especially if you're not going too fast and keep it in Eco Mode (no brainer if you have it in CC anyways) where MPG will start to go way past 30.

1. Hold down the odometer reset button and turn the ignition on by pushing start/stop button.

2. Release the odometer reset button, and you should see a menu of 4 items on the dashboard. From here on, use the odo-reset button to advance to the next entry through a short press, and to select through a long press.

3. Choose the one that says Unlock through the above, which will take you to a passkey screen. Your passkey is the sum of the last 5 digits of your VIN. Increment the two-digit number until you get to it, and with the long press of the odo button, select it.

4.Then scroll down to correction factor and modify it from 1000 to whatever you require.

My car claimed more mpg than it was actually delivering by about 6%. I changed the 1000 to 1060 and it now seems about right.

If your trip computer reads higher than true figures worked out, make the correction over 1,000. If your trip computer under reads, make the correction number under 1,000.

Check out this thread for more interesting stuff in the "hidden menu"....
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...603&highlight=
Note: In the thread they say to add the last 7 digits of VIN, but it is actually the last 5 digits..

Lindros, to be clear, are you saying that after replacing your run flats you get 2mpg less?

Or the other way around?

It took me a few adjustments, but i now have the car's MPG computer calibrated correctly. My final number was 1038. I just completed a 1,900 mile road trip and averaged 29 MPG.

Yes - after replacing runflats with NON runflats, my MPG plummeted.

2011 535i WITH runflats: blended average between 23-24
2011 535i WITHout runflats (WITH Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus): blended average 2MPG less

2013 535i M-Sport WITH Michelin runflats: about 5-10% better than 2011 (comfort mode, not ECOpro)

Must be the stickier summer tire rubber compound.

X,

I have seen this commented on this board, and it does not make any sense to me. What gets broken in that suddenly increases MPG?

Please explain.

Maybe the more aggressive summer tires change one's driving style.

My take is that engine and drive train parts need to Rub together for a bit to find their own peace with one another. In earlier days an oil change in the first 500 miles from new were thought to be valuable to drain out the metal particles from the grinding of moving part and left over junk from machining and casting of blocks. Modern machining tolerances are much closer but on the molecular level won't be as good as the peace making process and that takes place by letting the moving parts polish themselves. Once the surfaces are smooth to the point that they are insulted by the oil film your engine will be more efficient and seem to rev up more freely.

Whether this is a sudden phenom, a few thousand miles did it in my case.

Regards, don m
