Fuel Injectors replaced AGAIN

Last week my '11 550i started running/idling rough resulting first in CEL coming on, then drivetrain malfunction warning flashing in vehicle status.

same thing happened about a year ago, @ 21K miles, car now has 37K miles.

Last year my dealer first replaced a O2 sensor, but CEL came back on day I picked her up, then was correctly diagnosed with 2 bad fuel injectors- they then replaced all 8.

Got call from my SA today, 2 more bad injectors, replacing all 8 again.

Anyone had this happen twice?

I asked my SA what is the root cause, he couldn't answer, anyone who this has happened to know what the underlying issue is?

Could it be related to gasoline? , I always use Premium fuel

Wondering if the new injectors have been modified as I know this has been a recurring issue on the turbo V8's...

Fuel Injectors replaced AGAIN

Same thing happened to me at 35K miles. I had my 2012 550 in the shop twice before the injectors were replaced. Apparently BMW only replaced 2. The SA informed me that one of the plugs was fouled and distributing too much fuel which caused the drive-train malfunction to occur. Prior to that the car would run rough at idle. It took several discussions and emails to convince them of the issue. Watch out!

Sadly had the same fuel injector issue for the first time during 4th of July and it took 2 days to get the car back. Initially the dealer did not know what's going on and had to contact BMW, my SA said it may be heat and over idling (?). keeping my fingers crossed that there won't be any more problems with other cylinders and sensors.

I had the same issue last year with 23k mile. My Service Center replaced all 8 injectors. So far, so good with 33k miles.

The injectors issue seems to be affecting 550s. I have an early F10 550 (Build date 6/2010) and thought I was paying the price for being an early adopter. I was surprise to see MY 2012 having the same issues.

Seems this is a 550 only issue? Any 535i's report injector issues?

Its mainly just the 550 guys. The N55 seems pretty solid after the issues the N54's went through. I read a technical document about the LCI 550 engine now using the same injectors as the N55 and N20.

Round 4

had another injector fail! injector in cylinder 2 replaced yesterday after car shuddered upon startup- CEL stayed on. MY CA and BMW swat team a bit perplexed as they are clear on history, newly engineered injectors being used. seems like BMW hasn't figured this out, stay tuned.

Have you asked to have your intake cleaned? The "drivetrain malfunction" message appeared as soon as our 2010 550i GT lost power, shuttered if we touched the throttle, and shook constantly. We changed numerous ignition related parts to no avail. Our dealer was perplexed. They finally recommended having our intake cleaned. The intake cleaning was $250. We had carbon build up, and the intake cleaning solved our problem. Our dealer said that intake cleaning is recommended maintenance. Our direct injection engines suffer from carbon build up.

If you feel like they are scratching their heads, and they are just throwing parts at the problem then it would be worth asking them to clean your intake. A huge benefit from the cleaning was the amount of power our engine regained from the service. My wife even noticed how much stronger our GT felt..

Hey JT

I had all 8 of injectors replaced a year and a half ago in my '11 550i with no more problems. Every once in awhile, I will get a rough idle; however, I believe it has more to due with the gas since gas companies changes their formula in the winter months per EPA.

I hope they resolve your problem; I know it can be frustrating.

In early November 20011 I picked up a CPO 2011 550i w/30,000 miles in St Louis and drove it back to Chicago. The carfax gave me a brief history of vehicle maintenance and I noted that 4 plugs and injectors had been replaced at around 8,000 miles. Lurking these forums prior to purchase I was well aware of the issues with the 2011 550i's.

Despite some of the complaints from the 'purists' on these boards regarding lack of feedback with the electronic steering and the necessity of certain suspension packages (which my car doesn't have) I've truly enjoyed the power and handling. My last car was a 2008 Benz S550, which though impressive in its own right, doesn't compare to the ride characteristics and power of my 550i.

But as it turns out, since purchasing the car in November 2011 I've only been driving on 6-7 cylinders. My 33,500 mile maintenance was due and upon leaving the vehicle with the SA I informed him it had a rough idle and was pulling to the right on the freeway. This being my first experience with this car/engine I wasn't really sure if the idle was rough or normal for this V8. But I figured I would say it was rough anyway given what I read on this board regarding fuel injection issues.

The service tech dismissed the pulling to right as being the result of of road crown to facilitate water drainage. But he agreed with the rough idle. After investigating further he found 2 spark plugs on bank 2 with wet fuel on them. After replacing all bank 2 injectors and spark plugs along with cracking crank case vent lines (another common problem due to heat of the turbos) I've noticed a considerable increase in throttle response and horsepower. With the mis-firing cylinders the car was more powerful than my outgoing Benz S550. But oh my goodness!! It feels like I've gained another 30-40 horsepower. I plan to do the BMS stage 1 tune this spring but it's nice to FINALLY enjoy the car's true power after 2 months of driving.

Had all 8 injectors replaced at about 39k miles, I had owned the car for less than a full week at that point. I was less than thrilled. Seems to be running great since though, except for the battery issue (which is getting replaced by a new one under warranty Monday).

Two weeks of ownership - 2011 550i msport

Dropped off my 2011 550i msport yesterday (30k miles). Car had slight vibrations at stop light (harder idle with warmer weather).

SA called today that all 8 injectors will be replaced due to two leaking on each side. Since I'm new to BMWs and the 550 I had limited reference on what to expect (though in the back of my mind, I thought that my car felt weaker than other 550s I test drove but thought it might be in my head).

I'm hoping all will be okay with vehicle going forward. Read on this forum that an issue developed with the new injectors (clicking noises). Hope this doesn't happen.

2013 550i same thing

Just got the car back 3 weeks ago. Same problem. Rough idle, fuel smell at startup, got an error code as well. Replaced all 8 injectors. Have 17k miles on the car. Car is fast again. Smooth idle was immediately noticed. Now at times I have a bit of a rough idle again and sometimes so smooth can't even feel the engine is on. Is this fuel.

Wouldn't they clean the intake when doing this service, or should I request the intake cleaning as well?

I just responded on Jan 23 to this thread regarding that I had all 8 injectors replaced on my 2011 550i and stated the car has been running with on problems. Well this past Friday, I found my car on the back of a tow truck because the car began running real rough and stalled several times. I was lucky enough to "limp" into a parking lot. So, I am guessing that it is the injectors again. What made it even worst, my CA asked me if I left an iPOD plugged in the car. I would like to know how in the hell an iPOD can cause rough idling and stalling. He also stated it maybe the gas which I explained to him I've been using the same gas (Sunoco Ultra 93 and Shell V-Power) and gas stations since I bought my car almost 4 years ago. The only thing he did not blame was the car!!!
My wife was teasing me stating she has had 4 Nissans and not once they ever had to be towed. Does anyone know a good divorce lawyer? ;-)
Last, I've been buying BMWs since 1983 (320i) and it seems every new model's reliability gets worse. I think I am done with the V8s. All of my V8s had problems (towed), '04 545i, '08 550i, and now '11 550i. The best 5 series I've ever owned was my e39 '97 528i (5 speed). Boy, do I miss that car!

This is not a fuel issue. Remember the days, those of us with the N54 engine were told....."it's a fuel issue!" took some time, and I believe some legal tango and it was fuel delivery issues including injectors, rails, HPFP. look how many recalls and service campaigns came for that.

Before this latest injector redesign recently, the injectors in our 550's were the same injectors in the N54.

How big of a job is it to replace the fuel injectors? And should the spark plugs be replaced as well?

Is this a straightforward job or is there significant room for failing to put the engine back together properly?

I know it doesn't take too long. Dealer replaced all plugs and injectors in less than half a day. there's some stuff to come off, but it's not a huge deal. however after finding a technical service manual on-line, if it's not done right, things can get screwed up. My biggest wait was getting the parts in. I'll have to look up the service invoice and check out how much time was charged. I don't know if it will list it since it was warranty.

I do not think there's a specific cause known. I have the codes listed on the service paperwork (one of the few service write-ups that I was ever given). I think BMW is using a shotgun approach and does not know what is causing this issue. And it's a repeat problem as you guys have seen.

It doesn't take long but can be pricey if you are out of warranty. I had all 8 replaced on my 2012 550xi and was curious about the total cost sans warranty. They told me about $3,000 for the whole thing. I had a lengthy discussion with an engineer and he said it was the gas I was using. He said the ethanol content in the US was the issue, even if you are using premium gas (I use 93 octane). I primarily went to a Sunoco which was just down the street, but they are not on the top tier gas list so now I drive a bit more to go to Exxon. Here is the gas list the engineer recommended I use:

http://www.toptiergas.com/retailers.html

So far so good, it's been about 5,000 miles and I haven't had another issue. Good luck.

Interesting that neither Sunoco nor Gulf are on that recommended list. Maybe there is some truth to the Shell V Power hype.

Regarding the warranty cost: it would be interesting to know if the injectors are covered by the EMISSIONS warranty instead of the VEHICLE warranty. IIRC the emissions warranty is for 6 or 7 years and 60,000 or 70,000 miles, depending on your state. It would truly suck to have your injectors go Tango Uniform a month after your warranty expired. Anyone?

Costco with Clean Power has enough detergent to be top tier. it's interesting because Costco originally didn't back it but said they would do more research.

Costco top tier locations:
http://m.costco.com/clean-power-locations.html

this is what Costco said in 2008
http://forums.audiworld.com/archive/...t-2606847.html

I will say that back when I had my G35x on the East Coast, I had faster 0-60 times with V Power vs. Sunoco 93 octane. (about 0.05 seconds)

this is also an interesting video on fuel injector cleaning:

Back in the shop

Had my car for a week (only because I wanted to actually drive it for a bit) and dropped car off today again at dealership. Although all injectors were replaced, no sooner than the first stop light down the street from the dealer, car exhibited same subtle vibrations from before. I was going to give the car a chance for a bit longer but I couldn't resist responding to an auto generated email from my dealership asking me how I am enjoying my 'fixed' car. To the dealership's credit, my SA called me within 30 minutes.

I received a 528i 2014 m sport as a loaner and there is no vibration. Although different engine, I expect the same performance out of my 550i.

Hope to report back in a couple days with a positive report.
