iphone 5 compatibility with 2008 335i

I recently upgraded to an iphone 5 and would like to play music through my 2008 335i cab's logic 7 sound system. It has the previous gen idrive. The Apple supplied lightning to USB cable does not work. Yes I did a search on the topic but I am still confused:

There were some posts that said with a software update I would be able to use the Apple lightning to USB cable?

Other posts said that the only way this will work is if I purchase an Apple 30-pin to lightning adapter then use the old BMW Y-cable that I currently use with my older model ipod (my ipod works well as I am able to play music and I can select songs using the idrive controller)

I also found a post that said if I have the 639 or 6NL "BMW Assist with Enhanced Bluetooth and USB" the Apple supplied lightning to USB cable will work. Is this the software upgrade referred to in the first question above?

I have a 2008 335 and an Iphone 5. The lightning cable won't work. You need a BMW supplied cable designed to connect with the old style 36 pin connector and an Apple supplied adapter to connect the lighting connector to old apple connect on the BMW cable. You can also use the apple adapter to connect to other legacy apple connector products. I think there are two apple adapters, one with a longer cable. Get that one. I think you may have come clearance issues if you get the connector without a cable, although it's cheaper. I have had my connector for a year and never had a problem. If you get message saying the iphone does't support the cables, ignore it.

Thanks for the reply. I assume you are talking about the Apple 30-pin to lightning adapter combined with BMW Y-cable (the same one I use for my old model ipod)?
