AWD Clunk

Hello! Has anyone had this issue? This is my first snow in my 2000 BMW X5, and I can hear a pretty noticeable clunk when the AWD kicks in... Is this normal? It has over 137k miles, maybe I need to have the diff oil changed? I've had several other AWD cars in the past, have not noticed them make a clunk when the AWD engages... :-/

I think it's normal. My wife had a similar complaint when we first bought our X5. My solution for her was to stop driving like a maniac when the roads were wet.

The AWD is always on, the clunk isn't really from the AWD engaging, but from the DSC varying power to the slipping wheel. The DSC in the early model X5 is fairly primitive.

Ditto...the 2000-2003 E53 X5 has a full time AWD (planetary gear transfer case) that has 38/62 (bias toward rear) split. It doesn't have the variable transfer case like the 2004-06 e53s which have xDrive...but is more like the e30/e34 "ix" models (with DSC thrown into the mix).
