2014 production delays

I heard from my BMW rep that 2014 GT production has been pushed back to September. Anyone else know anything?

While my CA was happy to take my deposit, the order was on paper using the printed 2014 pricing guide. When I asked for a production number a week later, he said it would not be till the end of August.

The sedan seems to be shipping however.

The pipelines for dealer ordered cars needs to be filled...customers' custom ordered cars sneak in when a slot opens, but the dealers often have ordered their first models early, or corporate has dictated they take some, and when those are all queued up, the rest can start to get slots.

Anybody have a confirmed production number/date yet? Trying to do a late September Euro delivery and can not get a confirmed pickup date due to "production delays."

Interesting. I requested 9/20 delivery and they have yet to commit to it.

I received my euro welcome kit by FedEx yesterday....

My only problem is I haven't decided color, picked a color but I need to see sample chips and no one has them yet. German brochure isn't enough for me.

Which colors are you trying to see? Callisto Grey and Jatoba? Wonder if the regular '14 5 series in those colors will be on lots soon?

There are several individual colors that I'm looking at.. they are all new for 2014.

Also, which the US could get the 6WB dash. However, it's probably something that would go out in 4 or 5 years and I'm one to keep a car a while... so maybe it's better having the 6WA cluster.

Also, first Automatic for me personally ever... Only went with the automatic so I could get the ACC that ties in with the detection system for braking automatically.

Individual colors are not available on a GT

6WB dash is not coming to the US on 5 or 5GT. (only 7 series for this year). 6WA is standard.

Production of the GT has been pushed back, starting Sept 2 at the earliest.

I have a production number and confirmed ED date. BMW ED department called me last week and now says they "may" not have my car ready on the confirmed date. If they don't BMW promised to provide something "better" for our 2 week trip. We will see... Dealer still says production date in the system is week 32.

I wonder what is causing the production delays? It was supposed to start production in July.

Apparently what ever delays they had on the GT's have been resolved. I checked production status this morning via BMW's voice automated system and my 2014 550GT has gone into production with a completion date of Aug 9.

I also verified this with the Euro Delivery department.

BMW tends to be somewhat of a perfectionist...they get parts from LOTS of vendors and are spot checking the stuff constantly. Because they use JIT production, there is often very little excess inventory available to continue, should a critical part or process prove defective or late. It's a testament to their suppliers and the cooperation they have that things don't fall apart more often!

When taking the tour in SC, for example, the seat covering orders were only a day or so in front of when they needed to be used to complete a car. As you can see, a hiccup could stop things.

The factory in Munich has a truck arriving about every 5-minutes throughout a 16-hour shift (they stop at night because the area around them has become residential to help abate some noise). One late truck, and things get messy. By no means does this mean every vehicle is 100%, but they're pretty close.

Luckily, this hiccup seems to have been resolved quickly. On one car I ordered long ago, it took them over a month to figure out why the paint didn't look the same on the soft bumper coverings verses the metal panels, and they stopped building that color during that timeframe. I got offered a different color choice, and got my vehicle in a relatively timely manner. Throw in a strike at a supplier plant, or some natural disaster, and all bets are off!

That's lean mfg to the extreme. I could understand that mentality when nearing the last quarter of a MY, especially leading into a LCI but that's crazy being that dependent on everything going to schedule....but now that I think about it, it makes perfect sense to a German, just look at how well they run their train schedule!!

Well, think about it this way...stockpile lots of parts, then find something doesn't work right - lots to modify or throw away, plus, the factory has to be bigger to store the stuff, and it's much harder to pull in running changes. Unique parts for a vehicle come packaged with the requisite bits in order of production vehicle along the production line. One car may be a sedan, the next a coupe, the next a touring of the same series...the parts are in order and specific for that vehicle and even the color of paint as it goes through the paint booth can easily change from one to the next - the robots just swap paint heads - takes less than a minute. One car white, the next black, the next red...you get the idea. Very orderly!

This technique was pioneered by Toyota and there have been lots of books written about it. It takes a tight system, but when done right, works quite well.

If you haven't had an opportunity to visit one of their factories, you should take the opportunity. The easiest may be if you order a car, have it delivered from the performance center in SC (this is also available if you did European delivery, that is what I did). As part of that, you get a free night in the hotel, a factory tour, time on the track, and an intro to your vehicle - all free, including meals. If you do a European delivery, the BMW museum, a factory, and corporate headquarters are across the street, and you can book a factory tour there, and get free admission to the museum as part of your delivery day.

Has your car been completed? Euro delivery still refuses to confirm a late September ED for me.

Ernest, not sure if you should believe your CA.

I just took delivery of my 2014 550GT at the WELT. See pics and my initial thoughts: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...33#post7785533

Long time ago, I ended up with a production delay (different company, but similar situation) - it ended up being a problem with a supplier - they couldn't get the bumper cover to match the body paint. It took them several months to resolve that issue and offered me a different colored car with a discount. All it takes is one hiccup in the supply chain for some innocuous part and things can grind to a halt. It may only affect one model, or one color, or one specific option, or something that would seem simple. The factory spot checks things, and if they find a problem, may end up having to tear apart cars already built, and then that slows everything down while they play catch up.

I have no knowledge of what's the current issue, how big it is, or what specific thing that is the root cause. Could be as simple as a miswired plug in a harness. And, as I said, it could be it's only affecting a specific combination of options. The good part, if you want to look at it that way, is that at least they try very hard to not let an incomplete or non-functional vehicle leave the factory! Doesn't mean they are all perfect, but at least for something obvious, it gets fixed first. Used to be, especially with American vehicles, they expected the dealer to catch their mess-ups - some did, some didn't. At least now, most companies really try to not let a defective vehicle leave.

Sucks when it messes with your plans, but s*** happens.

Yes, but that's not America. MY CA is saying BMW won't give a production slot for US market till October.

Also here: http://www.theautochannel.com/news/2...rst-drive.html

"The 2013 5 Series will be available in Modern and Luxury Line and with the M Sport Package from July 20 in Germany, The Netherlands and Austria and a week later in the other European countries. Russian dealerships get the 2014 5 Series on August 3, but North America and Asia will have to wait until September, and Japan and Korea until the beginning of October."
