335i... took one for the team today

Traveling on the I-5 South this morning, came up to a sudden stop in traffic but the Toyota Camry behind me didn't. Camry is totaled but I'm sure my car will not be as it took a clobbering but was still somewhat driveable. I can't believe I will be without my car again for weeks or months! Here is the Camry:

No, you are not anywhere near totaled, but don't let the Camry owners insurance company sell you short. I had a rear bumper run in with the car only 18 months old. After a little bitching, and getting BMW Collision on board, I was able to get the offending party to replace not "repair" the thermoplastic bumper cover. Don't know how important this is to you, but to me it was huge, and as I am closing in my 4 year anniversary, it would still be huge if it happened tomorrow. To wit, if the car is in pristine condition, I don't care how many miles are on it, fight for what is right.

Really sorry to see the damage, but be glad it's only bumpers not you!

Keep Safe

Well...it was a rental car that company employees were driving from a major retailer so hopefully I will be OK. Honestly, after the impact, I thought they would be going to the hospital. The impact hit me so hard that it shot me forward about a car's length into a 2012 328i that I was admiring while trailing behind (we were both fully stopped for a "one-thousandone" count)! I am also amazed how solid my car was during the impact. Luckily I saw it coming in my rear view mirror so I was able to counteract the impact in the car vs. having a serious whiplash effect. And thanks, everyone was OK which, is most important. I felt very bad for the driver. BTW...this is second rear end accident I have had in 8 months and not my fault. Not meant to have this car?

I thought this was going to be one of those "Guy behind me can't stop as fast as the BMW" stories, but it sounds like you were already stopped.

Glad you're ok. Cars can be repaired easily, people on the other hand are a bit more difficult.

That'll buff right out It's good now you get a bumper repaint, not a bad time for a clear wrap on the entire bumper.

Glad you're ok and that's amazing damage to the Asian import compared to your's. Hopefully the process now to get everything rectified won't be too bad. Keep us posted!

That's because all that crushing absorbed the impact.

OP, hope you are feeling ok. Though it looks like you'll be feeling pretty bad for the next couple days or so. Or the impact might have been transferred to the car in front of you.

Anyways, you walked away. That's what's important.

Your car has bad juju. Fortunately your life has been spared for the second time now. See the sign being presented before you, sell the car, and upgrade to an M3.

That would be optimal! I already miss my car...this sucks! Thanks for all of the support though people!!! I think the Hyundai crumpled as designed. Scary stuff!!! I think it did absorb most of the shock as all I heard was a loud crumble/crunch noise and felt a hard jolt.

And...I will admit, I was a little intrigued to get the Kia Optima today as a rental as it looks good for what it is and pricing, and I've always wondered. What a sled!!! I want my car back!!!

...come to think of it, I've never been involved in an accident in 31 years since I started driving and now I've had two in 10 months with this car....

Sorry for your loss... it doesn't look like her air bag deployed? Were you able to see what she was looking when you looked at the rear view mirror?
If she had been driving a BMW with active cruise control with stop and go do you think the car would have been able to handle this sudden stop situation?
Does the other insurance company pay for rental car for you?

Re: 335i... took one for the team today

I had enough time to brake, stop, look into my rear view and see her grab the wheel with both hands and scream, then slam on her brakes and cruise right into me. Both of her airbags deployed. After impact, I got out quick to go see if they needed an ambulance or immediate assistance. It looked so bad. For a split second before all that, I remember thinking, "Nooo....this is not happening!!!".

...and yes, they are paying for everything. Basically, my insurance handles everything (all factory parts btw...Progressive) and the corporate insurance will cut a check to my insurance company for the bill. Just found that out yesterday. Will be without my car for a couple months I think.

Do not forget about the diminished value claim to their insurance company.
