245,000 Mile X3

Call me crazy but I just bought a 245K 2005 X3. I paid more than I probably should have but I couldn't resist. I looked at other examples that were similarly equipped with half the miles for double the price so I said what the hell, why not?

The X3 has had two previous owners with the original trading in at 40K and the second trading in three months ago. I bought it from the BMW dealership that has serviced the car its entire life so full service records. It has all the original documentation including the window sticker. Everything works including the bluetooth with my Galaxy S3 and fiance's Droid Bionic.

Options include:
Cold weather package
Premium package
Servotronic steering
Sirius radio
Titanium Silver Metallic on black

The dealership installed new pads, rotors, and tires 10,000 miles ago and new sway bar endlinks before it went up for sale. So the plan is to drive it until it dies so we'll see how far it will go.

Cheers.

$7,000 with tax title and registration so like $6,300 private party price.

I forgot to mention it is a 3.0i auto. I wanted a manual but since the fiance will be driving it I didn't want her to complain.

That is now the highest reported x3 miles on this forum! A lot of us have had great luck. The key is maintenance. Enjoy!

It would e interesting to know what every set of tires has been, it would be an insight into the PO's stewardship.

In order of frequency:

1. Pirelli Scorpion STR
2. Michelin Primacy MXM4
3. Bridgestone Turanza (EL42?)
4. Dunlop SP (Sport-01?)

It appears the previous owner stuck with Pirelli whenever it needed new shoes. It currently has Pirelli P6 all seasons fitted.

And as promised:

Wow! 245k miles? I stand in awe. The previous owners must have done something right. It appears to be in really nice condition.

I also prefer Pirelli tires for my X3. I am told that a version of the Pirelli Scorpion STR was designed specifically for the X3. Although the brand is Italian, these specific tires are made in Germany, and have a star on the sidewall, indicating they are BMW-specific tires. Incidentally, I am sure this does NOT apply to other sizes of Pirelli Scorpions, which are used for many other vehicles.

Please keep us updated on life in the "grandfather" of X3's.

Also, welcome to Bimmerfest!

Great story, and she looks cleaner than many 2012/2013 Kia's I see on the road today Amazing how some people treat their vehicles!

Good luck, and I hope to sell my X one day at 240,000 for $7k. I'll let you know when I'm closer...lol

I found something that needs to be repaired...

After doing some research, it seems I just need to replace the bushing on the passenger wiper spline to prevent the wiper arm from hitting the trailing edge of the hood.

LOL no big deal.

Thanks for all the warm welcomes from everyone.

I'm amazed that people will pay big money for a car and neglect the leather. Mine get a biannual application of Lexol and they are as soft and supple as the day it was delivered.

I've seen some that is tight as a drum and hard as cardboard.

I couldn't believe the condition of everything on this X3. There is one 2mm hole on the left side of the lower cushion of the driver's seat but it has been addressed. The carpets are in great shape and it has new floor mats, courtesy of the dealership. Hell, even the ski bag is brand new. It's still in the plastic wrap in the storage spot near the battery.

The underbody is great with only a little rust on the LCAs but nothing on the unibody. One of the roof rails has some corrosion under the black coating but it looks fine and who really cares? The driver side fog light was not aligned correctly so I was thinking it was going to need a new bracket but when I took it apart the fog light had just popped out of the mounts so that was easy.

Wow! Excellent buy! I've heard stories of high mileage X3s passing through my local BMW dealership... in really great shape!

That's really encouraging news. I had recently done the math on weather to keep the X3 until 200K+ (currently @ 131K)... or trade it.
Decided on keeping it. Nice to see they really do run strong for a long time.

It's a fun SUV to do quick mods on:
Added the oem trailer hitch and wire harness.
Swapped the upper center storage console for one with the Garmin mounting ball on it and mounted a Nuvi 3750T with all the wires hidden in the dash.
Added a Mediabridge 1500 for USB/Ipod & Audio Bluetooth integration (...still use the oem bluetooth for telephone conversation), couple days ago.
Got some new rims & tires coming in today.
Figure on doing the shocks in the fall.

That's a great buy you got there! Extremely clean looking! Congrats!
Have fun with it!!

Every time I hear somebody say not to own a BMW out of warranty I think of Murray.

It looks very clean, good luck with it. I am curious of service history especially for transmission, waterpump, transfer case, and differentials. How often was engine oil changed?

Thanks a pretty need ad. Had not seen it before. I like the part where he says "BMW has got a special spirit in it"
